A $250m five-year deal is my recollection.

Some other comments in the thread....

I don't agree Beckham was on his way out, ability-wise, in 2003 upon the move to the Madrid Royals. 2002/3 was the season United last won the title and Beckham (with Van Nistelrooy and Rio Ferdinand) was a major protagonist. Beckham's move from MU was based more on (a) a personal feud with Sir Fergie (you may recall the occasion when Ferguson kicked a boot in temper at United's loss to West Ham in the FA Cup and it accidentally (we think) hit Becks on the head) and (b) the rule that no one player can be bigger than the team and club, strictly enforced by Ferguson. Beckham's immense celebrity was in clear violation, and Real Madrid have no problem with that, so off he went.
