I read somewhere that at the time of its' discovery, nobody really thought Pluto was a planet. However, It was discovered by an American and Americans hadn't made any significant discoveries in the space sciences, so they lobbied hard for Pluto to be considered a planet.
I think it was discovered right after the stock market crashed and calling it a planet would boost everybody's morale and the world would be a swell place again. |
