Yes, but it's also the case that Chavez's ban, while nationwide, is not going to be in effect for more than a few days(as opposed the 100 years of blue laws in some US counties) I'd say that somewhat mitigates its geographical reach.
Furthermore...
Suppose that it's back in 1980, when a few Swiss cantons still denied women the right to vote and the Equal Rights Amendment had just been defeated in the USA. A Swiss guy, from a canon where women CAN vote, says that the defeat of the ERA is typical of the totalitarian mentality that he thinks is rampant in the US. Wouldn't you find the Swiss guy's outrage a little misguided?

But the problem with the compromised courts could apply to ANY legislation Chavez passes, not simply the Easter Week dry laws. But I think that BJWD was trying to give the impression that the liquor control laws are particularly offensive to liberty. What I am saying is that, by American standards, the content of those laws are not particularly outrageous.

And no, I don't think you guys are hypocrites. But I do believe that you have fallen into the trap of thinking that because you might have justifiable reasons for disliking someone, every single thing he does has to be interpreted through the filter of his overall badness. |

I'm not American. Uh. So, yeah. So I don't think I have to qualify every statment I make about nation "x" with an equally bizarre story about a country I do not come from.
But I do think that the laws are "particularly offensive to liberty", but that isn't really that strange as I think just about everything government (ALL governments all over the world) does is offensive to liberty. But my particular disposition pushes me towards an unusual, and searing hatred of government policy that is informed by religious assumptions.
I posted the OP for many reasons. One, the left loves this dude and having his religiosity thrown in their face amuses me. Lots. Two, I was surprised at his religiosity and thought others would be too. Three, well, I just like to post shti about Chavez. And others I can't think of now, cause I'm tired. |

Well, if that's the case, then I guess I might have misunderstood your reasons for posting this story. I hope, however, that I can be forgiven for my confusion, since your "totalitarian" comments in the OP led me to think that you were making a broader political point beyond the idiosyncrsaies of his character.
I have to say, I find this bit from the article a little far-fetched...

If this is all about sucking up to Iran, I don't think it's gonna work. Even assuming that Iran cares about the alcohol laws of its allies, I don't think they're going to be much impressed that Venezuela has banned booze for three days per year. |
