To me, the single most amazing aspect of the pyramid builders is that it was an all-consuming task. In the modern world we have nothing even remotely occupying an entire culture's attention, at least not in architecture. |
There is a good reason why that culture collapsed .... |
Ha. Pyramids of yesteryear are the aircraft carriers and F22 stealth fighters of today. |

I don't think the majority of Americans worship these weapons or stand around like cartoon characters in Whoville holding hands and gazing in awe. Poor analogy, I'd say. |

Modern society, like a lot of things, has simply removed the community pyramid building a step or two away. The majority of Americans are not directly involved in building F22 fighters but they fund them via their taxes. Some might suggest making a pyramid instead of tending your crops is just as much a waste of productive energy as building an F22 with your tax dollars instead of allowing you to retain those dollars and buy yourself a tractor.
America, of course, is in far better position to fund such things. However, it's pretty clear the pyramid building of our day doomed the Soviet Empire. |

I'm no fan of the F-22.
The pyramids were important to the Egyptians because the burial of the Egyptian pharoah secured his place in the afterlife. By securing his place in the afterlife, all those who served the pharoah were able to be protected by their pharoah, who relied on his servants to bury him properly.
I'm a fan of the pyramids.
It was floods, over-reliance on mercenaries, strained relations between priesthood and pharoah after Akhenhoten's attempted purge of the priesthood (Akhenhoten was followed by the puppet Tutenkhamen), and foreign invaders (Assyrians and Persians) who eventually overwhelmed the New Kingdom. The New Kingdom lasted over one thousand years, as did the Ancient Kingdom several hundred years before the New Kingdom.
What were you saying about the F-22 being America's pyramids? |

You're right. I would not really try to argue the pyramid had much to do with the fall of the pharaohs. I'm just playing off of the other poster's metaphor. |
