Buddy Holly's legacy is inestimable. There's a reason why Paul McCartney bought Holly's entire catalogue; it's evergreen.

"Heartbeat" is my favourite Buddy song, but there are so many.

For those who like Buddy Holly's music, you are almost certain to like Roy Orbison's. I stumbled across a DVD of a live concert of his down in Busan, called "Black & White Night" that is a killer.

Roy does all the singing, and his back-up band is awesome: Jackson Browne, T Bone Burnett, Elvis Costello, kd lang, Bonnie Raitt, JD Souther, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits and Jennifer Warnes.

17 tracks, including Only the Lonely, Dream Baby, Blue Bayou, The Comedians, In Dreams, Crying, Mean Woman Blues, Dream You, It's Over and Oh, Pretty Woman. All in all, not a bad legacy to leave.

i've seen this concert a couple of times on pbs and it never ceases to thrill me. what a fantastic line-up, and it's so well-shot as well. visually appealing as much as it is musically.

Another haunting voice from farther back than Roy was Phil Ochs.

With all due respect to Phil Ochs, Roy Orbison was recording some years before Ochs got started.

I can hardly recall Phil Ochs (or Dave Van Ronk, for that matter...) but his music was a lot more political than Orbison's (though he prefered the term "topical singer"...)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Ochs

Someone of that era who was more like a Yankee version of Roy was the late, great Gene Pitney (who passed away last year at age 66 while successfully performing in England ...)

Both were blessed with extraordinary vocal range and sang with strong emotion. Moreover, according to this Wikipedia article, they were "practically the only American soloists to withstand the British Invasion..."

I LOVE Gene Pitney. Thanks for the jolt of nostalgia. 'Only Love Can Break a Heart', 'It Hurts To Be In Love': classic teen-angst songs.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waylon_Jennings

On the night of February 3, 1959, the airplane carrying Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson (aka The Big Bopper) crashed outside Mason City, Iowa, killing all passengers. Jennings had given his seat to Richardson, who had the flu and desperately needed rest. In his 1996 autobiography, Jennings admitted for the first time that in the years afterward, he felt severe guilt and responsibility for the crash. After Jennings gave up his seat, Holly had jokingly told him: "I hope your ole bus freezes up!" Jennings replied, with equal jocularity: "I hope your damn plane crashes!"; these words would haunt him for years.[3]
