I strongly suggest Florida, especially Kissimee where all the Disney Theme parks and Universal Studios are located. It's not just for kids. I liked the dinner shows such as Medieval Times Dinner Tournament and Aladdin Nights. Be sure to visit all the time shares to get the freebies. I did and it paid for my entire vacations.
Next, I would go to Savannah, Georgia. Wow, there is a lot of beauty, culture and history there unlike anywhere else in the USA.
Next, I would go up to the beautiful Great Smokey Mountains. Talk about beautiful scenery. It just doesn't get any better than that, especially in the fall. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are full of great entertainment and unique culture.
Next, I would go to Lancaster, PA and visit the Amish communities.
Next, I would go to Washington, DC and visit the free museums such as Smithsonian Institute. The city is full of fun and interesting things to do.
Next, I would go to Cedar Point in Ohio because it's one very beautiful park with the most amazing roller coasters in the world. It's right on Lake Erie. It's the best amusement park in the world. You can visit the Rock and Roll Hall of fame near there in Cleveland too.
Next, I would go up to Mackinaw Island, Michigan. Then to Traverse City and the Upper P (to see some great wilderness). |

Two months! What a treat.
So you want to see San Diego? Think about flying into Seattle, renting a car and driving down Hwy 1 to San Diego. Take your time, there's lots of scenery along the Oregon Coast, then into Northern California's Redwood Forests. Take a day or two in San Francisco before heading South again to Monterrey and Big Sur, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, then LA and finally San Diego and TJ. On the way out of town, you might head out to Death Valley and Las Vegas, back to the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff and Santa Fe. Santa Fe is definately worth spending some time. Maybe North to the mountains of Colorado and then down to Texas. Head east to New Orleans, on to Florida and then follow some of these other ideas being posted here.
Awesome. |

I'm from this area, and it is beautiful, but DON'T go in summer. What a nightmare! If you do decide to go, I'd be happy to recommend some great camping, hiking, and eating spots. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge do have a "unique culture" if thats what you call tattoo shops, airbrush tshirt shops, and junk like htat. There are a lot of nice places to visit, but they aren't one. If you do go to the Smokies, hit up Asheville, NC and Biltmoe Estate, larged private home in teh US. Its absolutely amazing and well worth a day. |

I heard on NPR that many groups that have meetings or conventions in New Orleans do volunteer work as part of their stay. |

Yes I was going to say the Biltmore Estate on the way up from Savannah.
I'm not sure why you are talking down your own area of the woods. When I visited Gatlinburg, I loved going to all the great shows. I also loved driving through the mountains in the national parks. Sometimes people live in areas their whole life and the place is old hat to them so they don't expect much excitement from the local activities. This is very common all over the world. Many Japanese think Japan is boring. Many Thais think Thailand is not very intersting. and so on. |

| I love the Smokies, but I hate the touristy crap that is Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburt. Cosby is a nice quiet town on the edge of hte park, and the campground there in the park is quiet nice. The nature is what makes the smokies great to me. But different strokes for different folks. A friend of mine in DC loves Gatlinburg for the same reasons you do. |

I have traveled all around the US and the most impressive thing I have seen is the USS Constitution in Boston. I also liked the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon. Hated Las Vegas.

| The key question is how will you be travelling? Will you have a car? If so there's a great deal you can see. It's kind of hard to go wrong travelling in the US. While it's not a place I'd ever want to live in again (I did for three years) there's no shortage of interesting stuff to do and see. If you're able to keep politics and ethics out of things, ordinary Americans can be really interesting to talk to, especially if they know you're not from the States and are curious. |

With all of that FEMA money STILL flowing to the refugees in Houston, I would expect the displaced freeloaders should get down to NOLA and do some volunteer work themselves.
As far as recommendations.. I'm partial to West Hollywood, California, Santa Monica, etc, then driving up the Pacific Coast Highway up to San Fran.. Amazing. |

To end the Smokies debate:
Asheville is WAY better than anywhere else in the region. Well, except Cullowhee. But Cullowhee isn't really a place so much as a state of mind (any other WCU alumni out there?).
And the summer is WAY better than the winter (unless you go to Pigeon Forge, because yeah, then it's just a big parking lot) because everything is green and beautiful and you can go do all the outdoorsy stuff if you like that.
But yeah, go to Asheville!
After that, go to Baltimore. Baltimore is just...totally neat. They have this huge section of bars and such and then bygod they have a harbor with clipper ships and submarines and things you can go on. |

What about the other cities in that region - Nashville, Knoxville, Blacksburg, etc. |
