I have taken the overnight train from Bangkok to Nong Khai (2nd class, a/c). It is cheap and comfortable however, I should say I am a train person. I like travelling on Thai trains to see the countryside when I travel.

I'm a train person too, and I've done this exact same run. It was one of my favourite train trips. In Thailand, the 2nd class sleepers are actually really decent and comfortable, and they keep the trains clean and well-serviced.
