in contrast to most people on earth, i actually quite like american football.

it was pretty popular during the 80's in the uk as one of our tv channels covered the nfl; i even roped my friends in and bought a 'wilson qb' ball to play some knockabout games with. my team were the philly eagles, cos i liked randall cunningham (i was 10, i thought he had a cool name!) and the big lineman (?) whose name escapes me but who was huge. plus in later years my high school exams (or what we do in the uk) were nearly sabotaged by playing john madden football on the megadrive...

so i wouldn't be dissing american football.

but, and its a big ol' butt, you have to agree that when you say 'Football', most of the world will think two goals, one ball, kicking it.

I 100% agree that anyone outside of the U.S. pretty much thinks of two goals, one ball, kicking it when football is mentioned. Hell, soccer is the first sport I started playing as a kid and played through high school. I know you aren't dissing American football, and I don't really understand why people do knock it. As an American sports fan, there is nothing like a college football game experience, the atmosphere is electric. Also, I didn't realize Madden was a popular game outside the U.S., so that's pretty cool.

Outside of the World Cup and MLS, there isn't really any soccer coverage in the U.S. One of the cool things about living in Korea is I have been able to watch a lot of the premier soccer leagues in the world - great stuff. Football is so entrenched into the fabric of American society and soccer is seen as a sport for the rest of the world (outside of those who grew up playing it) so I don't see soccer ever becoming more popular. Even if the U.S. somehow won the World Cup one day, there would be a nice little soccer fever for a while, but it would die out until the next World Cup. I don't even know why I am writing about this. Maybe to justify why Americans love their football so much, not that I have to justify why one country likes a sport over another sport. Anyway, I would love for the United States to win the World Cup, if only for the fact it would piss of the rest of the world to no means! Very Happy

i have to say i agree with you mandrl in many ways... i actually think its a good thing that america has its own sports and the rest of the world has theirs.
sport is part of culture, and every country should be proud of theirs. soccer isn't part of the us landscape and i for one hope that it never happens. your sports are part of what makes america america, and the same is true for the football (soccer) playing nations too.
ask any football fan - 'what would you think if the us won the world cup?' they'd tell you they'd hate it for the reasons you described; that it wouldn't really matter to america. for that reason i really hope that beckham and the mls fail to get americans playing.
but yes, madden was HUGE in the gaming circles in the uk. as was nhlpa hockey, and ea's basketball games, and nba jam come to think of it.
if i was in the ROK i would be up for your pick up games too, but alas...

Thanks Seoulsucker!! I'm playing sensible soccer to the exclusion of basic hygiene. I smell and I'm happy!

BTW do any of you play Front Office Football? an (american) football gm text sim. Its a really addictive game. Its alot like championship/football manager(soccer sim), which is the daddy of text sims.

If the rest of the world could go to just one real football game in their lifetime, they'd be hooked. instead they think 0-0 draws are (yawn) exciting stuff. Gee, they almost scored! It was sooooooo exciting! No wonder hooligans riot. Soccer is DULL! Wink
