I know...in Japan he is very much a mixed figure. But there is so much to him...he can be so funny in a slapstick kind of way, yet utterly convincing as a yakuza gangster. And he can be incredibly romantic and sensitive (Dolls etc), down-to-earth, all in the same movie. |
Oh, I don't doubt that he's a talented actor and director. I first saw his movies in the early 90's (can't remember if it was Boiling Point or Violent Cop (I've seen both)) at about the time I was ending my John Woo phase (I had to find a substitute after seeing Hard Target). I think he's just appreciated/unappreciated for different reasons in Japan than in the West. |
