I haven't got any statistics. You may well be right but Blockbuster is one chain and is not retail. If Best Buy stop stocking HD-DVD, that would be more important.

Most people use online rental these days, Netflix et al.

It's a stupid move by Blockbuster, fracturing an already niche market.

Netflix has a total customer base of just under 7 million accounts (active and inactive). Everyone else can filed under the "other" category.

In terms of dollars spent, online rentals account for less than 10% of the video rental industry.

until TVs are hooked up the net and you can direct dowload to your tv set while sitting on your sofa with your remote control and have your online video store right in front of you while surfing through the genres choosing which movie to watch families are not going to all gather around the pc and watch a movie while eating popcorn..

until then video shops are going to kill it until we see a leap in online video stores and a move from PDP makers to incorperate something like the xbox or ps3 where you can have direct downloading etc to your set..
have a move downloaded and ready before the popcorn is even finished popping..

Blu-ray has been kicking butt, despite having a very weak summer release schedule (that's why HD-DVD seemed to recover a few points last week). I think Blu-ray only had 2 new releases last week, and HD-DVD had maybe 15. Usually, it's Blu-ray that has more releases, but they are holding back many titles due to the new BD+ encryption coming out late summer/early fall.

I am coming back from the USA with about 10 more games in two weeks. Just got Pirates, Harry Potter, Madden 2007 (got that one for $15), 2K7 Hockey, 2k7 College, 2K7 Basketball (2 copies of that), Virtual Fighter 5, Enchanted Kingdom, Blazing Angels, Motorstorm, Fight Night, The Dons, and a few more I can't remember. Many titles are going on sale for $30 to $40, given that the 2007 sports games are going to be replaced by the 2008 series. I also found lots of used games here, and bought several, for around $30 to $40 US. I'm sort of collecting.

I also purchased over 71 Bluray movies new/used on E-bay over the past month. I'll be watching movies for weeks! I plan to sell them off on auction.co.kr for maybe 20,000 each (you can't get many titles here, and even the non-Korean ones imported go for 30,000+).

I just won a big LOT auction for 29 more discs yesterday, and it cost me $413, including shipping! Averaging $14.25 per disc wasn't a bad deal, and most of the titles were new ones for me. I am currently trading a few off to other members on some blu-ray forum sites.
