Lunar New Year is a great time to come...the fireworks display over the harbour is always great.

Weatherwise...depending on your home country...is anywhere from longsleeve shirt to light jacket...it can get colder sometimes so light sweater in your bag couldn't hurt...the air conditioning is still on in most buses...i don't know why...so they are usually cooler than the air temp outside...

Roughly how much is a round trip ticket from Seoul to Hong Kong?

If I remember right my ticket was 380,000 plus tax. It was about 420,000 total. That was over Chuseok so if you are going over Sollal I imagine the price would be about the same. That was Cathay Pacific which I think is a great airline. Korean Air tends to be expensive. Apparently there are cheaper tickets available on EVA Air if you're happy to fly via Taipei.
I stayed at the Royal Windsor Hotel in TST. It was very central. Website is www.windsorhotel.com.hk I booked it at the airport hotel counter. It was about $52US a night including tax. Chungking and Mirador Mansions really were shit holes. Unless you're super strapped for cash I wouldn't stay there. It is an interesting building however and there's some great Indian restaurants inside. Worthwhile checking out.
PM or leave a message here if you want any more info.

Hey you said it buddy... Wink

Nah good one you got a really good deal it seems. I don't think you could get tix for much cheaper than that at any time of the year - let alone peak season. What travel agent do you use...? I'm thinking of a trip to San Francisco over New Years.

xanadu travel in itaewon. The woman that handled plane tickets just quit last friday. I'm sure I drove her to quit due to my constant e-mails, always asking about destinations and prices, basically looking for the best deal. Yeah, she hooked me up that one time, I must say. I had my g/friend call a bunch of travel agencies geared towards koreans (ie not listed in the herald), and she couldn't find a price that good either.

San Francisco huh? During the non-holiday season, it is around 650-700,000 (tax included) round-trip via Tokyo on crappy Northwest. Going direct via Singapore Air only costs 40-50,000 won more, worth the extra won if you ask me. 3 out of the 4 times I've done it, the plane hasn't been close to full either, so you can have some space to stretch out. Well that is unless you get stuck sitting amongst a big, loud, smelly Indian family coming from Singapore or India itself. Happened to me on the way back from SF last spring; sucked to say the least.

Thanks for all the info guys. I'm probably going to book my hotel in advanced because I'm sure it will be crowded for the hollidays. Might try and get something along the harbor.

YMCA Salisbury's probably a good deal then.
It was surprisingly fancy and was literally over the road from the harbor promenade. They have a website which I can hunt down if you're having trouble finding it. Have a good time. Who knows if my plans fall through I may even head back to Hong Kong. It's a great place for a vacation.

Just wanna give an update on good guesthouses in HK.

Hong Kong YMCA run exceptionally good guesthouses than other international branches, and standard comparable to 3 stars hotels.

You should called the YMCA on Hong Kong Island and stay there if you want a cheap harbourview hotel room.

That hotel is not in Hong Kong Island but in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon Peninsular. The name is YMCA SAlisbury. It's situated just next to the 6-stars Peninsular. Both have harbor view but guess what, YMCA is much damn cheaper. Since it's very popular. Make sure you make reservation as early as possible.

Another good recommendation is the YMCA International HOuse, located in Yau Ma Tei, KOwloon. There is no harbor view, but very close to famous night markets. Clean, well furnished, and quiet.

Both guesthouses are very near to subway station and connection to the airport.

I love Hong Kong.

I think I may do a stopover for a few days on my way to Bangkok in February as long as it's not too expensive.
