Your description of "all Black's accents" is far off the mark. To be blunt, it can only serve to perpetuate the ignorance which drives the "We can't hire Blacks!" attitude here.

Glad someone else pointed that out.

I am somewhat perplexed by your example about Jamaican English, Virgin Islander. I mean...you lived in the Virgin Islands and yet used Jamaica as an example. Just to enlighten you, many Jamaicans who go to college and are well educated have accents that are similar to British accents. It's no different to them than a southerns dropping their accent to take on a more "Midwestern" or "Hollywood" accent.

I find it amusing that you would think that Blacks would in some way be incapable of switching their accents but many teachers here (who most likely happen to be White or at least non-American) have spoken of having to water down or change their accents to fit the ideals of their hagwon bosses.

There is definitely prejudice out there, but I know someone who is of Asian descent and teaching with no problem, and another fellow who is from California who isn't white at all and might be a dark Hispanic or black (I am not sure) is teaching with no problem.

In Gwangju, the Seventh-Day Adventists run a hagwon, with a heavy contingent of African and African-American teachers. As far as I can tell, it maintains a good reputation and is quite popular, probably moreso than most hagwons. And it's popularity does not seem to be confined to SDAers.

Is it a Kang's, er, um, International School? I worked for the one in Junghwa, Seoul and it had two Black females. Most of the Whites were missionaries. Gee, come to think of it, it had two part-timers from the Phillipines who worked at factory jobs, too, AND they got the shaft from the then new owner of the school (an architecture professor by the name of Kim at Samyook University) just like Roch.

Ciao!
