In a nutshell, as it were.

The problem is, it's not planning that got us this far, just blind luck. I don't see people pulling together until they must. In this case (meaning the overall world situation and the various positive and negative feedbacks of various issues), I don't see that happening till a good many people have died that wouldn't have otherwise.

The current situation is highly chaotic and, as is the case with complex/chaotic systems, small perturbations can cause massive changes - for good or ill. Where we will end up is anyone's guess. The possibilities run from a leveling off of population and "relatively" smooth transition to other fuels to a massive collapse of civilization taking us back to, say, a level of the 1800's. If war and competition for resources is harsh enough, maybe further back.

It's an interesting time to be alive.

Hold on tight. Teach your children well.

The Club of Rome said the same things back in the '70's. We're still around 30 years later. And we will be around for at least another 30 more years...baring nuclear war or some UNFORESEEN global catastrophe Man's ability to adapt and develop (from living in caves to space travel in a relatively short period of time) has not been maxed out, not even nearly.

Or you could simply stick your fingers in your ears and scream:

Agreed. EFL has a very pessimistic view of his fellow man.

A kind of projection. He follows a possible corrollary to the golden rule: value others as you value yourself.

Any of you think China can grow all the food it needs itself to feed its citizens?

Who said otherwise? Strange point to raise given it's not been stated. Or are you referring to the article? I don't think it said that either.

No. I'll leave that to you. Does head in the sand work as well? Let me know.

Wink

Actually, let me address this little taunt: My posts have not ever stated an outcome on PO, GCC, or anything else. What is interesting to me is the degree of opposition to discussion of these topics.

I'm fairly certain that most of you CNCs, (in your human forms, not your rabid attack pack mentality ones) would claim an open mind when others express themselves, and that you may agree or disagree on the merits. However, you do not do that on THESE forums.

Why is that?

With GCC there is a huge amount of evidence that something is happening. I can allow as how one might go with "It's not certain why, but something is happening", but what we usually get is "Conspiracy!" Same goes for PO. Here we have the beginning of the issue from none other than a Shell employee, King Hubbert and seconded by none less than Admiral Rickover. But it's a non-issue or a conspiracy?? I know of no oil group, organization, or lobby that disputes that PO WILL happen. They debate when, not if. But here on this forum? It's a CONSPIRACY!!! Same goes for Iraq, in reverse: IT WASN'T ABOUT THE OIL AND THEY WON'T HIT IRAN!!! (Even though even the new President of France thinks it's likely after speaking with Bush.)

Sky is falling? We'll see. But I suggest you not ignore that hole in the dike too long...

You know, they probably could. You know the old saw about being able to feed teh world with a land area the size of Texas? Don't know how true it is, but it's probably not far off the mark with modern techniques. What percentage do they grow now?

The problem have more to do with soil loss, lack of energy to move food about, lack of fertilizer to continue the high yields, lack of phosphorus, etc.
