ipod is just an mp3 player? Not anymore apparently..

You mean they can do video now too? As have many MP3 players for a few years now. Again.....what's so exciting?

Being sceptical of Apple products is brash and annoying??? Laughing Don 't be so sensitive. If you like it.....okay then.

Here's what I found on the Macrumors site....

Apple also released the iPod Touch today, featuring full, touchscreen controls like the iPhone. Included apps are Calendar, Clock Contacts, Calc, Settings and a few more. Steve Jobs called it "One of the Seven Wonders of the World."

Thinner than the iPhone - only 8mm
Same multitouch pinch & spread zooming controls for photos as the iPhone
 Same coverflow as the iPhone
 3.5" diagonal screen
 Wi-Fi 802.11b & 802.11g - it can save your home network setup
 Home button
Slide to unlock - same as the iPhone
 Sensor for auto-landscape viewing
Safari - connect to the internet via WiFi
 YouTube via WiFi
22 hours audio, 5 hours video playback
Shipping worldwide this month - already localized into many languages
 8GB - $299
 16GB - $399

So it's "one of the seven wonders of the world" is it? I sure hope Steve Jobs had his tounge in his cheek when he said that.

It seems to me it's a scaled down PMP.........only with poor battery life. The iStation and Cowon range of PMP's do a lot more than this iTouch. Sure, they're a bit bigger, but they do have bigger screens, 4.3 inch, (better, right?) and they have longer battery life. As well as much bigger capacity HD's. And the feature count doesn't stop there. GPS. DMB. Kor-Eng-Kor dictionary.....there's a long list of features on fully-blown PMP's which put this iTouch into a niche. That niche being.......people who want really slim things.

Credit to Apple though. They are great at making people salivate over the latest slim device. Jobs is a marketing wizard.

I would say the advantage the ipod touch screen has is that it is smaller and easier to carry around and use as a music player. PMPs are a bit to bulky to carry around too much but the ipod fits nicely into a pocket.
The only real advantage ipods have over other mp3 players is that it is the easiest to use. The other mp3 players i've used are no where near as easy or enjoyable to use as the ipod. infact I really hated them until I was used to using them, but still found them lacking once I was use to them.
The next mp3 player I will buy will be based on sound quality, so i don't think it will be an ipod.

i think apple did that for a reason other than technological constraints. If they lower the HD then they are going to be guaranteed to have something for the next generation of ipods to upgrade to. Its a shame really, they could move with the times but greedy business gets in the way.

No, they did it because it uses flash memory, rather than a hard disk.

true. I realised this sitting on the bus... But still, dont they have 64gb cards these days? Or are they too expensive?

I don't think those are available yet. Actually, I think 32GB cards are still prohibitively expensive.

Yes. They have had internet for about a year now.

Here's the year old model...

Here's the latest model......NF2

Quote:
It is now possible to preorder in Korea) i-Station's latest bomb: the NF2 (NetForce 2) which will officially go on sale on September 3rd!
The design has been kept very similar to its predecessor, the NetForce, when it comes to the specs, you can count on a 4.3 inches WVGA screen, internet (HSDPA), i-Talk, T-DMB, Multimedia Acceleration Engine, Dynamic Video Engine, FM Radio, e-dictionary, Office Viewer and many more things...
The NF2 is compatible with DivX, Xvid, Mpeg4, WMV 7, 8, 9 for the video, MP3, WMA, AC3, OGG, WAV, AAC, FLAC, APE and MSADPCM for the audio, all in 2 versions: 30 (498000Won ~391Euros) and 60GB (548000Won ~430Euros)!

My wish-list is getting bigger!

I think the iTouch is cute and clever, but with only a 6GB memory why did they bother having video capability? That memory is way too small for a video player.

It'll come in 8GB and 16GB flavors.

iPod Touch is not suppose to be a PMP. If Apple wanted to, they could come out with a PMP/Video specific model with the larger hard drives that they have on the iPod video.

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple does launch a 60 or 80 gigibyte Touch that is more focused toward a video player.
