Ask Shin Dong Hyuk what South Koreans have to be grateful for.
http://www.northkoreanrefugees.com/2007-09-atbirth.htm
If Korea were united, the South would be able to enjoy the many luxuries
afforded by a totalitarian despotic regime.
Whoooooooooo Hoooooooooooo
Prison camps all over the country. Wouldn't it be grand! |

| Actually it was their hard work that contributed to its own modernity the most. |
Um, you can work as hard as you want. You're not going to accomplish much with your donkey and water catcher. Western science, technology, and education are what made Korean a modern economy. Not hard work. Without Western contact they could have still worked hard - and got absolutely nowhere (as with their previous 5000 years). Everything they have - everything - is because of the West. You can dance around this fact all you want. After the dance is over, however, you still have to deal with that stubborn fact.
Modern Korea is a Western success story! |
Sure the West gave them some help. But hard work is what made them a success story...as compared to most other countries that received even more aid.
Anyone who says different is just trolling. Bye. |
Oh BS. They were forced to make their country in it's current image by the yanks and aided by yank dollars and you know it.
Remember that thing called the Korean war? You think if it weren't for the yanks, this place wouldn't be some socialist hell hole ruled by the Kim clan? You think the yanks ever would have let that happen or let the society take the shape of one any other than what it has become?
Discussion over.
Delusional, you are. Good, it is not for you. |
Yes I remember that thing called the Korean war. I guess they should be grateful for having their country divided up among the great powers and being used as the proxy battleground and having millions of their citizens killed. Not to mention having an occupying force (and it IS an occupying force however benign) stationed on their land for 60+ years.
That's the other side of the coin.
As for the yanks the only people who are delusional are those who think it was done purely for altruistic reasons. |

^ So, according to you Korea modernized "because Koreans worked hard." The West, and its thousands of inventions, offered only "some" assistance to this process. The US forces here are not part of an alliance, but an "occupying force". When somewaygug-in says that you are delusional he's just being polite. You are way beyond that.
But keep posting. You do entertain. |

60 years of the best national security force that money can buy. |
Then they should be grateful to those specific people. |
Now I'm confused. Koreans should be grateful to the American forces in Korea? Didn't you just refer to them as an "occupying force". Are you suggesting that Koreans ought to be grateful for being occupied? Or is it that, just maybe, they are not occupied after all? Either you are a complex genius or the silliest person in the history of the ESL Cafe. I know where my vote is going. |

Actually that is not what I said. But at least you have stopped making up quotes and then attributing them to me.
What I said was MOST of Korea's modernization came about because they worked hard. I can point to several countries that have received as much aid or more yet are nowhere near Korea's level of development. If aid was the main criteria then why are these other countries not developed
Also I never said that the theory America is an occupying force was what I believed. I said that it was a theory in some circles or "the other side of the coin". That should have tipped you off as to what I actually believe. However this IS what many Koreans believe or were taught to believe...just merely presenting THEIR side of "facts".
Oh and please get your attribution of quotes straight. First you attribute a quote by another poster to me. (see the "your country" issue)
And now you are attributing a quote made by the Sultan of Seoul to Mr. somewaygug-in"
If you can't even get who said what straight when it is right there in black and white for you...why should we take ANYTHING you have to say seriously? |

I was not attributing the quote to you. I was referring to another poster's reference to Korea being "your country." If I was quoting you directly why would I have put "your country" in quotations. Clearly I was quoting another poster. No where did I attribute Korean nationality to you. I just said that, if you were Korean, it would explain the opinions you express. So I'd appreciate if you would quit misquoting me. (Go back and check it out for yourself.
What I said was MOST of Korea's modernization came about because they worked hard.
And I'm telling you this is pure and utter nonsense.

Nice try. Anyone reading this thread can go back and check what you said. You said, without qualification, "and it IS an occupying force." You even capitalized "is" for emphasis. Now you're pretending you didn't write that.
...And now you are attributing a quote made by the Sultan of Seoul to Mr. somewaygug-in"
If I did, it's a very minor thing. Of no consequence. The point was that someone said you were delusional. If I attributed it to the wrong poster it doesn't make the observation any less valid. Saying you are delusional is just him being kind.

(numbers are mine)
1. You said and I quote "In response to UrbanMyth's silly post..." Doesn't sound like you are referring to another poster's reference.
2. Okay link or anything to prove that? Since you are the one who made the original claim the burden of proof falls on you.
3. Again I never said that was what I believed. I gave the opposing theory...I guess you've never heard of Devil's Advocate then? Anyone can go back and see that I never said that I believed this theory and this is what happened. Stop making stuff up. Just because I post something does not necessarily mean that I subscribe to that view.
For example I could say "That Smithington fellow seems like a bright young chap...with no reading comprehension problems whatsoever...at least that's what some people think."
4. It does lead one to question your reading comprehension though. And just so you know calling other posters names is frowned upon on this site.
Anyway I think we've gone far enough off topic... |
