This is the best quote I've ever read anywhere, ever. |

Provided this video is accurate, I'd say Zidane had just cause.

Whatever Materazzi said, it was probably very unpleasant for Zidane to have reacted the way he did. What a shame. Zizou was a football genius.
A sad end to what was a great World Cup. |

| That's the whole point, there is no just cause for that action on an international sporting field. In a bar yes, but not on the sports field. He was simply outwitted in a psychological exchange which is part of sport. Headbutts are not part of the game... |

| Zidane said on Wednesday that he was provoked by insults about his mother and sister, and the comments must have been deeply hurtful or vile, otherwise Zidane -- something of a hothead, true, but a veteran who has no doubt been the target of some nasty slurs in his time -- would not have snapped in such an important game. It may be, as some have suggested, that the Italians were working on Zidane verbally the entire game, a perfectly legal and common tactic, and Materazzi's words were just the last straw. |

Meaning a dirty tactic commonly used by dirty players because they can get away with it. Just because it isn't illegal doesn't make it right. |

Satori: let me first say that I'm neither French nor Italian, so I really don't have a big emotional investment in either team winning. I also agree with you on the point that some players engage in trash-talk to try to unhinge the opposition. That's ok. I'm sure Zidane has been exposed to that on a weekly basis and he deals with it. However, there has to be a line over which players do not cross simply for the sake of human decency.
If what the press is saying is correct, Materazzi called Zidane a terrorist then insulted his sister and his ailing mother. What kind of sick person says things like that? It's on par with someone using the "n" word in the NBA (or anywhere!). Nobody is going to let that fly. Nobody.
This must be doubly true in Italy, a country where mothers are truely revered. Satori, honestly, let's say your mom was in hospital and you were playing a high pressure football match and someone from the opposition tweaks your nipple, uses a racial slur against you, then, to top it off, insults your sick mother. Would you be ok with that? Perhaps you are more thick-skinned than I am, but when it comes to my mom -- sick or otherwise -- I go off the handle.
This incident has tainted the final. Read the news. More people are talking about the headbutt and who said what to whom than they are about Italy's vicory.
It's never going to happen, but I wish players would stop diving and insulting each other and try to win the old fashioned way: through superior skill.
By the way, the Azzurri played some very pretty and fluid football this WC. I'm a big fan of Cannavaro and Pirlo. |

Materazzi said he did not talk about his mother!
so what was said on the pitch will stay on the pitch...
zidane could be making this up for all we know..
or materazzi might be lying!! what ever the case!!
EVERY SPORT in the world the players insult each other..
baseball, the catcher ALWAYS speaks insults to the batter.. either you turn around and smash him in the head and get fined and banned from sports! or you ignore him and try to hit the ball!!
basketball!! im sure many brothers are insulting each others momma everyday on the court to get a rise out of someone!!
ICE hockey! hahaaha I think insults and then fights are part of the game!!
you name the sport there are insults exchange! IM SURE ZIDANE
has slurred his fair share of them too!! he even curses his own team!
and if anyone was actually watching the game!! did you see when the french coach touched his arm and tried to talk to him.. zindane looked at him with this dirty arrogant look and ripped his arm away and stared at him and walked off... the coach just walked away, hoping the cameras didnt catch it.. and this was way before materazzi said anything..
zidane is trying to say he was provoked , WHATEVER!!
so when he stomped on the saudi abrabian in 98 he was provoked too so that makes it alright, becuase the saudi said, something about his mother
sounds like zidane is a cry baby, he can dish it out..
but he cant take it..
still Zidane, he is an awesome player!! and I always liked him.. |

| True, there are insults thrown around in every sport. But, I think professional sports draw the line when it comes to racist stuff being thrown around. If it can be proven, I would imagine that they would/should come down somewhat on Matzarattatoniario. But, award the game to France? Whoever said that is reeeeeeeaaaallly out to lunch. |

There's a lot of examples of ignorant tripe being posted on this thread and this is a fine specimen. Albanian?! You don't know how funny you are.
I hope Zidane retains his Best Player Award - and of course no-one's going to contemplate stripping Italy of the World Cup. |

Shoud Zidane be stripped of the award? No, because the journalists voted before half time of the final game.
Should FIFA punish him for his actions? Yes, but stripping him of the award is wrong. The problem FIFA has is that Zidane is no longer playing football, so it feels that the only punishment is to strip him of the award.
Is there another form of punishment? Yes. Fine him for his actions and let it be known that if he had nor retired he would not only be fined, but also not allowed to play x amount of games.
This would then send a message to other players not to try the same thing as Zidane. |
