The only three things I miss about home are:

1.) Variety of food
2.) Public libraries
3.) Potable tap water

In Russia the food is not so good. There are really only a handful of national dishes and they are nearly all quite boring. In the part of the country where I live there are very few immigrants from exotic countries, so there are almost no international restaurants. The few there are, are expensive.

In local grocery shops there is nothing interesting, and crappy little frozen pizzas are about as exotic as it comes. So, my typical diet here is eggs, pasta, bread, buckwheat, cheese, sausage, onions, garlic, tomatoes and potatoes. With some spices, like red pepper, I can make some good meals. But the combinations are getting tired.

When I go to the large supermarket on the other side of town I like to buy a few exotic things like Bulgarian hot spiced cheese, Polish corn chips, and Armenian bread. Together, they remind me of Mexican food.

I'd love to spend a week in a Mexican restaurant on vacation! Chili-con carne, tacos, tortillas and salsa, burritos, fried ice cream. That would be fantastic right now! I haven't eaten Mexican in more than 2 years.

Shin Ramyun, convenience store kimbap, and a couple cans of Cass.

************

Barring that, a Philly Cheese Steak from Clark Street Dog in Chicago with onion rings and a pitcher of Goose Island Honker's Ale (locally brewed). Also, a couple slices of Chocolate Pecan Pie from Heaven On Seven.

Not really craving anything right now, since I did something stupid yesterday. I went to a all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ and asked the ajumma for a lot of rice. She asked me how much, so I off-handedly responded with four large bowls. She looked at me like I couldn't do it and asked me if I really wanted four, so I took it as a personal challenge. Three pounds of rice and three pounds of meat later, I'm still paying the price. Embarassed

As long as I had plenty of kimchee and beer, all that rice and meat doesn't seem like it would be that terrible... in fact it sounds like my idea of a great meal!

You can keep that Taco Bell garbage though, give me Mexican Spicy Taco Family in the alley behind UN Club in Itaewon, they do pretty decent burritos.

You'll regret it the next day. It makes your stomach rot and your skin ooze the stench of death. It's delicious, however.

A large slice (or three) of my mom's homemade strawberry-rhubarb pie. And a liter of cold milk to wash it down with.

Mom's fudge brownies, no walnuts, each one with a miniature Reese's Peanut Butter Cup baked right in the middle, and a litre of really cold Canadian 2% milk, please...
...and a roasted free range chicken stuffed with chantrelles and morels...
...and mashed potatoes and chicken gravy...
...and steamed asparagus, and broccoli.
And a really cold IPA.

You should try Goose Island IPA from Chicago, the Guardian called it "probably the best beer in the world."

I can't say I miss too many American foods. I would love to get some BBQ though. I good pork bbq sandwich right now (Georgia style) would be soooooo good.

I'd also love to find some Chewy Granola bars, S'mores flavor. And Girl Scout cookies. ;_; I'm getting hungry just typing this!
