I've been hired by a language institute at a university in the Seoul area. I guess technically it's a unigwon, but I'll be teaching credit conversation courses to the university's students. I used to work for the SMOE, and this will be my first time teaching at the university level, and I'm both nervous and excited.
As for the conditions, I'll be teaching 16 hours/week with 3 additional office hours, and that will all be over 4 days a week (yes!). The pay will be 2.4 million with an additional .5 housing allowance for a total of 2.9 million a month. And vacation will be 12 weeks a year. In addition, the staff members I've talked to seem quite nice (knock on wood).
Overall, I'm more than satisfied, especially considering my lack of university-level experience. I was pretty sure I'd have to take a job outside of Seoul, so I'm glad that didn't turn out to be the case. Best of luck to all those applying right now! |
Conditions look pretty good for unigwon, congrats. |

A not so sweet job's been advertised for a university in Jeju. Far away from everything, not a great place despite all the nonsense re the 'Hawaii' of Korea - not.
Payment 2 million won per month. Before tax of course. Housing is supplied but because the ad on the cafe has some strange figures on it, you can't see if you pay for the housing. You pay for the utilities. No airfare. No pension, no medical.
The hours look okay but they then mention there are things in the contract that they haven't put in the ad.
And the same ol, same ol - MA, TESOL. Personally I think this is a bit of an insult. People should just not apply and they then might have to hike up the pay. |

hiring season is getting close to being finished, you should have checked woo song's ad, its a good place to get your feet wet since you have experience. check university websites just do a google search of universities in daejeon
i have a MEd (not in TESOL) 13 years univ teaching experience here and got exactly 2 interviews so be aware its very tough.

Why do you think you got rejected from so many jobs with 13 years of experience and a masters degree? Do you think age plays that big of a role in hiring? |

couple of reasons: yeah age is an issue as is a lack of ma/tesol but the biggie for me is that after 2 years at one of the "name" institutions, i decided to go to a small 2 year college since my wife was working at it, i knew many of the staff in fact i taught a summer program there, etc and thought it would be a nice change to be in a smaller environment. well most koreans think thats an incredible f up. thats according to the feedback i've gotten throws up a major flag |

So, just omit it from your resume. |
