7 years and I never said 4, so yes you misread it. I tell you now no Korean adjoishi has EVER let me pay the tab, despite me feeling very embarrased and very forcefuly having tried to pay. Familly is different, again you should know this.

Maybe your coworkers did, but mine never have. And again, I mean literally (playfully, but certainly physically) pushing me away from the cash register.

Here's a smiley seeing you're so fond of them Laughing

The trick is to pay before they notice. When it's my turn, I excuse myself to go to the bathroom and pay before they have any chance to argue. After, they say I didn't have to, but I know that they are pleased.

Yeah I guess so. I'm always uncertain whether this would be innapropriate and would be considered a kind of loss of face as the rule seems to be that elders pay for juniors and guests to the country especially. I just tend to go with my role and go with the flow as to not upset the boat I guess.

Hmm..be careful. My old co-workers would do as you described, but were very quick to call the previous NET cheap. Sigh. Sometimes you can't win. I'd do as NYC Gal describes. I think you overestimate 'face.' I think they would be pretty pleased if you snuck off and paid. Unless they are very wealthy.

These guys are your friends though, so you know them better than any of us. What's your heart saying? Razz

Whats with the eyeroll?

Fail to see where I insulted you floating. Sigh... I did say I must have misread it (the 4 vs 7 years).

Anyway, after 7 years in country, I am sure you have figured out a lot of the social interactions that occur in Korea and how to work within them. As NYC Gal said and like I said in my previous post: trick is to pay before they get the bill or go to the cash. That is perfectly appropriate.

Patrick, though you are often on the mark most of the time, what people take issue with is the, unintentional or not, smugness that bleeds throughout your posts. Perhaps you haven't even noticed this. You seem like a decent and smart guy, but people see through condescension. Just letting you know.

Those smiley faces do not help.

Depending on the situation and the person or people you're with, another good way to pay your share is to do a round 2 somewhere, make it clear you intend to cover the bill for it.
