not sure what this says or means as I don't understand Korean, but my point was that even if there was turbulence outside of your big 3 Korean trading partners/export markets, Korea would be disproportionally hit because of the reasons I outlined previously.

evens something that may happen in Timbuktu. So long as investment funds react to any global development, Korea is first in the firing line.

which will simply mean that IF the won climbs 7.1%, other currencies will climb around 10% or more.

Yup its pretty simple. The only way the Won has any hope is if there is more QE and the market inflates once again. That would be a risk-on scenario and people would start to invest in the Won again. A good chance that more QE is on the way worldwide, however it won't solve a single problem and is merely a method of kicking the can down the road.

I am currently making minimum wage and am looking for a job in Korea. I pay almost everything I have in rent, so the way I figure, even if rates drop, I have absolutely nothing to lose.

Still, what should I ask for in terms of pay? I am a newbie with no teaching experience as of yet. So far I have been requesting 2.1 m won a month. Should I increase this amount? Is the won falling that rapidly?

The credit rating agencies have strongly suggested that further rating cuts are likely if Congress does not come up with a credible long-run plan. Hence, we expect at least one credit downgrade in late November or early December when the super Committee crashes.

What did you get in USD?

It was just under $8,500 USD

Rest of it right now. now. now.
you won't see the won in the 1000-1099 range
for quite some time.
If you need the liquidity ASAP, now is the time.
I got an 1180 rate the other day.

If you don't need the liquidity, stock up on some
silver bars.

If you don't plan on staying in Korea, long-term.....
you're losing money keeping won.

Does anyone know what the Won closed at today? Just curious...

Posters have been saying for three years now that the won is going to return to 1,000 = $1 USD any day now. That obviously hasn't happened and probably never will happen. How's the won doing now? Way worse than a couple of months ago.

It's not quite as bad right now as this thread makes it out to be. Normal inflation combined with stagnant salaries is, in my opinion, the bigger issue.

When the won hits 1250-1300 or so to the dollar, that's when I'd start to get worried. The difference between 1100 and 1180 fluctuations? Meh.

Actually, the KRW has rallied recently. It was as high as about 1200 to the USD. Now, it's about 1100 now to the USD. Now more people are avoiding the USD. The USD has extremely strong technical support at 900 KRW. So, I want a weaker dollar right now. So, I can send more money back home. The USD faces some technical resistance at 1200 KRW. However, the USD face all-time high resistance at around 1500 KRW.

Say what you want about the won but the won dropped not because Korea has a bad economy at all, but that its overseas markets are struggling. I had a sense that the weak won wouldn't last as I was in Korea when the 1997 and 2008 crises occurred.
