| To update: I have a follow-up interview now with the first Korean website to publish the story ('ohmynews') so that will come out tomorrow. They said many Korean netizens were wanting to know how a foreigner came to take the photos...why it wasn't a Korean etc etc. They will probably want to get into more cultural issues/foreign perspective etc. |
You might take the opportunity to note that part of the reason many Korean netizens may want to know that is because of the unending sensationalist diet of anti-foreigner diatribe fed them by the Korean press. To which your actions provide a very realistic and refreshing balance.
Or, you might not. |
Yes, I would like to mention how many foreigners feel that we are unfairly portrayed in the Korean media. Yes, there have been some unpleasant incidents here, but we are too often 'categorized' as drunks/drug-takers or even ironically, child abusers. That one pedophile case last year has effectively pigeon-holed many English teachers (men) unjustly... if it comes up, I will try and tactfully expand on that issue... |

Congrats, and good job to all involved.
My coworkers were discussing this at lunch yesterday. They were all very happy that the kindergarten had been caught, and said "foreigner this and that" positively.
If Netizens wants to know why a Korean didn't take the photos...well, Koreans are into face saving and abuse is considered a private matter.
But probably the only way YOU could answer that question is to say, "I'm not sure. I think Koreans need to ask themselves that question..." |

finished a very, very good, in-depth interview with 'Ohmynews'
They were extremely professional and really good guys. Asked a lot of questions about cultural issues and seemed interested in the media's (mis) representation of foreigners in Korea...they explored that in depth so will be interesting to see what comes of that tomorrow. They basically said that this kind of issue will be able to help change the negative stereotypes of foreigners here...fingers crossed. |

Three cheers, CTR.
Maybe you'll hit two birds with this one. Improve the lot of small children and grown foreigners at the same time. |

Thanks, that is really great and I'm sure a lot of people would appreciate it. I saw you (the non-blurry part, anyway) on the initial SBS report and thought you handled it fantastically. |

Thanks. I'm really amazed at how supportive complete strangers have been. Of course its nothing to do with me as an individual, and anyone Im sure would have done the same thing in this situation, its just nice to know that a lot of you really care about this cause. So, thanks to all those people who sent me PM's of support...The week has been a little stressful and I really appreciate everyone's kind words... |

Actually, "CabbageTownRoyals" is also well known for her work for her concern for the plight of animals, and she has done some animal rescue work in Korea.
She has also attended "Seoul Vegetarian Club" meetings in the past - hopefully she can make it to the February 16 meeting that will try to help out a shelter facing a deadline:

Maybe she'll sign autographs! |

Ok,
This thread was cleaned up to remove some of the posts made by some users that simply aimed at insulting others or derailing the thread.
Leave the flaming out of this thread please. Shame on those few posters who posted messages insulting others or using this sad event to make some pathetic little point against other users.
I also want to say to the people involved here that you did amazing work. I applaud your efforts here as does my wife (she is Korean and she cried when she first saw the pics and heard more of the story). As a father, I can only voice my unequivocal support of the intiatives taken in here.
Well done! |
Well done, Homer. |

OK, the Korean interviewer has reworded this somewhat, obviously they are not my direct-words. The interview has been simplified, but the points are the same... |

This part of the interview is interesting:
| Quote: |
[Interviewer:] If you look at Daves ESL Cafe there are some foreigners involved in child sexual abuse and drug crimes and so on so the Korean media doesnt like it, but you hope that this will cause the media to change for the better.
|
What the hell is that about? Is it suggesting that just by looking at threads here, we can see evidence of foreigners ' wrong-doing? Was this mis-translated? Hater Depot, any clarifications here?
While I applaud the follow-up piece by Oknews, this "question" is perpetuating the evil-foreigner views... |
