I haven't read this entire thread, but a few years ago I did some scam baiting...

This is a funny website that has absolutely tormented scammers and gotten more than a few arrested. Torment to the extent that there's naked pictures of the scammer (holding up a sign with a message, for authenticity) hanging things from his giblets...

By the way, there are certain rules to scam baiting that let you have fun, but keep you out of trouble.

1) Never give any real information (obvious).

2) Use anonymous email that doesn't display your IP address in the header, such as gmail.

3) Never try to get money or anything from a scammer. This legally makes you into a scammer and you can be charged with fraud. You are welcome to take the scammer's dignity.

4) There are various services online that allow you to set up phone numbers that you can access through the net (like Skype) that are anonymous. You can then use digital recorders to record the phone calls for entertainment. Funny voices are encouraged.

5) Never send scammers even fake passports or identification, as they can turn these around to use against other people. If they ask you for a picture or passport, you should go searching through your computer for a random .dll file, copy it somewhere else, and rename it to a .jpg. They'll spend a ton of time trying to open it (which won't be possible)... and it's doubly funny if you send like a 25 mb .dll file disguised as a .jpg to clog up their email.

6) When they send you obviously fake pictures (such as the one our merlot has received), make them run in circles sending them a few times. Tell them you can't open them or didn't receive them. You can really start abusing them and insulting them for their idiocy during this. Pretend like you're losing trust in them and force them to start sending pictures of them holding up a sign with a "security message", such as a sign proclaiming their loyalty to Godzilla or something. No matter what they do, every picture they send is 'wrong'... so you lose trust and make them do something more ridiculous... until they're naked on a goat with a candle in their rear.

7) Go and send $1 to yourself at Western Union. This will give you a receipt with a routing number. You can either send them the receipt with the routing number blacked out to bait them along, or you can give them the routing number (but not the secret question that Western Union uses for security). They'll go to the W.U. and they can see that there is money there, but they can't see how much it is. You can run them in circles as they try to get the money.

My favorite that is not exactly scam-baiting but closely related is the guy who pretended he was a police officer at the scene of a murder and gives some telemarketer the fifth degree. Hilarious stuff.
