I go there mainly for the foreign food shops and restaurants, but the idiot ratio goes up on weekends. Streets are covered with trash and vomit on weekend mornings, and recently I encountered a Korean urinating on the open sidewalk instead of against some wall or behind a tree. |
This sounds kind of like the rest of Korea on a weekend. |

can i hate it because UN club is the worst place ive ever set foot in?
'After bar' on the other hand (which i was in prior to the venture to UN when one of our friends took MASSIVE exception to being in a 'gay bar' and refused to do anything other than cross his arms and look very annoyed for thirty minutes without a drink and with his back firmly against a solid piece of wall), was just lovely.
I also had a fabulous time there last saturday night. the jumbo kebab at mister kebab was about as nice a kebab as ive had in the 4 years ive spent in japan and 2 now in gwangju. Could have done with being a bit spicier and maybe a nice lump of feta cheese and a pickled pepper, but otherwise it was just yummy. |

given what I saw on Sat night to claim that only people who refuse to integrate and coexist with Koreans/Korean culture go there, is a super preposterous claim.
it's also interesting one guy claims it may now be "in" for Koreans. I kind of had that exact same thought myself, but am afraid of stating it because I'm not in a position of close observation to base a good statistical sample on such a thought.
but I can repeat that the streets were overwhelmingly Korean so any urinating, trash or what have you were "Korean" as well. (actually the streets of itaewon were far cleaner than the loogie and throwup chunk infested walks around the main Korean nightlife strip around my house). The new upscale restaurants in the back of the Hamilton were full of young Korean women overpaying for their surroundings and their wine, etc.
b1 was 99% Korean and there was a huge long line to get in. I didn't ever bother.
helios was 95% Korean and was a good time, though I didn't much care for the music which tilted too mainstream/top 40 for me.
a cool place, though too small, right next to b1 is bar naked. where earlier in the night the very young looking Korean kid dj was playing just superb, superb progressive stuff of the kind I haven't heard in Korea up until now.
Alas a little later when more people came in, he got more mainstream/top 40 also though I did enjoy a little reggaeton set, topped off with a huge Latin American silly pop hit from over 10 years ago. (this would fit in right with typical K pop fare)
spy bar late, did not have many Koreans in it. It seems to be host to the resident Brazilian expat crowd in Seoul, including one super brunette model hottie who was actually slightly less standoffish than I'd otherwise expect.
(though my Portuguese is very poor, I wonder how she'd be if Spanish was her language)
Homo hill was its usual self, hooker hill was very very quiet and now I see that if you walk a little lower from homo hill there's a little tranny valley.
yah, UN isn't my thing, but they did play several very good rap riffs/songs and someone brought out a big blunt alit from the john which they proceeded to shamelessly smoke on the dance floor (several K girls were very very eager to take a toke).
btw. I probably saw about 2 guys all night I'd take to be GI's and most of the foreigners I met/saw around were not English teachers, or what I'd take for an English teacher. Perhaps they were in the bars/pubs, but that environment doesn't really interest me.

here's what sucks about going out in Seoul.
from Itaewon.
subway doors opened at 5: 15 am.
first train arrived at 5:40 am.
caught connecting train on my line at around 6 am.
got home at 7:30 am.
Way too effing late to do this with any regularity. Subway ride home was super annoyingly tiring. Good thing the sun wasn't shining or else it would have been hell.
however, all the places I went to had my fave drink, vodka cranberry at 5 or 6K won and the Quiznos sub after a night of hanging out and drinking after 5 am was heavenly.
best thing would be to catch a cab home around 4 am or shortly thereafter, but that's a 50K won fare. |

| Those of you who are so proud of Itaewon and consider it your "home away from home" will eventually talk some newbies into going there, and there will be fights and other incredibly stupid behavior, and you will end up looking like a fool for recommending the place. It's happened to many of us. And if you think that fighting, barfing, and getting hit on aggressively by whoever and whatever is "charming" then you belong in a place like that. |

For such an avid promoter of events Korea-related you're surprisingly jaded when it comes to Itaewon.
What's this "home away from home" nonsense? Who is actually pushing that point? Most posters in support of the place seem to be so for the food, shopping, and recreation. Not the "comfort" factor, and definitely not the debauchery, which is completely avoidable, just as going into any red-light district in Korea is.
You ever been to Zelen? I don't seem many fights or stupid behavior going on there. It's a pretty classy place with damn good food and decently priced wine. You really want to discount a wide swath of unique restaurants and bars for some event that happened to you how long ago? Give the place a shot during the early evening. If you don't wanna rip it up then get out before the night life picks up. Not that fun can't be had that way either... |

lol this is out of left field
I'd respond properly but I'm chuckling at how the conversation went from "Itaewon is becoming very 'in' with Koreans" to "you're going to tell a newb to go there and they will hate you for it later!" |

They won't "hate you" but you'll look foolish after telling someone that Itaewon has some good stores, just give it a chance. Then, as soon as you get up to daylight out of the subway station there's a brawl in the street next to Nescafe with a couple of dudes with beards and backpacks wrestling each other over who spilled a beer at RMT or some other bar, and all of this is at 10 am. Classy? Hardly. Just imagine what will happen outside in the streets of Itaewon when the Canucks lose game 7. It'll get ugly, for certain. |

At night you can see scenes like this. During the day, it's an okay place to eat and shop. |
Can you tell us about the video? It's been removed because it was disgusting, or something like that. |

I see that all the time in my hood, and I live in southwestern Seoul. |

No actually this won't happen, as long as you preface it with "it's a bit rowdy". |

Two dudes wrestling? You recommend Itaewon to someone and they freak out over two dorks wrestling?
Meh. |
