There might be some Outliers but most of the big famous schools are absolutely horrible places to be. . Lets just say that any school that doesn't provide one with enough income to support a family and then turns around and says you can't work outside is nothing more than a sham job and ought to be blacklisted.
I would bet the list of Korean universities who match such a description would would be quite long. |

I knew a couple of folks back in the day, but, now...I have no idea.

Yup, though I do have years of experience and a CELTA, FWIW. There are some jobs listed now that will consider you with a Bachelors- Kaya, Naval Academy, Hansung, etc.
I guess with all the competition, many unis can be selective. Also, they get higher 'points' in the gov't rankings if they have 'visiting assistant professors' with MA/PhD. |

Is that true? I heard a BA + 4 (4 years of uni schooling + 4 years of uni teaching) is like an MA + 2 (6 years of uni schooling + 2 years of uni teaching). A PhD is 8 years of uni schooling (or more), so no uni teaching experience is required for that one. BAs can easily get uni positions if they already have four years or more of university teaching experience. And the irony is it was easy in the past to get a uni job with an unrelated BA and year or two at a hagwon or public school (and that was back when hagwons and public school would hire anyone eligible for a visa), but no more. The middle aged guys working in unis with only a BA lucked out. They were in Korea back before hardly anyone in the world had heard of it, hence competition was lower.
Nowadays ads say:

So those without prior university teaching experience would have to get a PhD in order to be considered. But it that really worth it for this?:
