This isn't an anti-American thread, it is a thread that highlights some of the issues associated with obesity. The authors of the article do not single out Americans in any way, given that obesity is quickly becoming a global problem. But then, you didn't read the article did you?

It is a shame that so many Americans happen to be obese, but western nations in general have problems with an overweight population. It is an issue that should be tackled in the same manner as smoking, through education and stricter government regulation. I believe that a public discussion regarding the issue is the first step in that direction, and when I posted the link it was to stimulate just such a discussion.

What strikes me about the current situation, is that one cannot call fat people fat, because they immediately become offended. Why is that? Smokers don't become offended when you call them a smoker. If you're fat then being called fat shouldn't offend you, after all, you failed to make the lifestyle decisions that would have kept you from being called fat. But, instead of taking responsibility for your flab, you shift blame - on your genes, on the fast food industry, on the fact that your job requires too little physical exercise, on everything and everybody, except your own choices. Don't be offended at being called fat, keep in mind that you being fat offends others. It offends those who cannot feed themselves and their families, it offends those who have to pay for your extra health care costs, it offends those who care about the environment and see you driving around in a SUV because you're too fat to ride a bike. So, don't be offended when I call you fat, take responsibility for it, educate yourself, change your diet and become more active.

The definition of fat is unclear at best.

Koreans would call me fat if they knew how much I weigh. But it barely shows.
