Thats what occurs in the natural fire cycle. The woodlands are able to clean out and rejuventae.When you have a situation whereby the forest does not get its needed frequent burn through, then a lot of dead undergrowth builds up too much. When it finally catches, it causes a far bigger and more dangerous fire than normal. which is what we see now. |
i agree, but a decade wouldn't be frequent enough! sd county just had a big fire 3-4 years ago - same thing with schools and offices closing down and everything. the fire was seriously about 2 miles from my apartment that time (got some pics on a really crap digital camera). i'm not sure if this current fire is necessarily hitting the same spots, but it sure seems like it.
plus, i think the public, and maybe even some people in the government, are not really aware of the natural necessity of fire. i know they've done controlled burns in some state/national parks, but i'm not sure about CA - we might still be stuck in the smokey the bear mentality - "always prevent fires!" |
