It is on! the the little pointer thing is set at a cosy 20 degrees, but no heat is happening. My boss doesn;t speak english. IF its not on by the beginning of nov, heads will roll. |
If you have various buttons and switches on your control panel make sure the one particular switch is pointed towards . To view the Korean characters, select (V) then (D) then (Hanguk-o). |

I've had it from the horses mouth today. All my korean co-workers agree that its cheaper to turn your ondol on and of daily as and when you need it. leaving it on all winter will merely result in a whopping bill. I think I'll take their word for it. |

Ok. There seems to be a middle-ground here about turning off or not. I've just asked around the office and the Koreans are telling me that they use the "going out button"...... |

Coming back? Perhaps to visit, but teach english? 95% unlikely. |

How about the dryness? Waking up itching my arms and back...floor heat is dry! I bought a humidifier, but if your apartment is small u can turn on the shower for a while or boil water to let the moisture through. |

120,000 won does about 6 months in my apartment, and I do the on/off thing. Thing is...I barely use it, really; in fact, I use a fan throughout the winter, partly for white noise, partly for the breeze. |
My God, when will the madness end? Ondol AND a Fan? That's a double whammy! You'll get dead with a capital D! |

Also make sure to check there is no leak in your oil. I had a whopping bill too. I checked the boiler room and discovered a leak in the line. My bill was cut in half after a quick repair. |

There aren't any switches or anything - just the hot water button, sleeping button, and outing button. Also where is "V", "D", and "Hanguk-o"?????

I read in Lonely Planet to leave a wet towel on the floor. I'm not sure about that as it will be pretty ugly, having this wet towel on the floor every day. |

Blueflower,
Are you in a high-rise apartment with an ajeossi downstairs? Get him to get it going for you.
If you're in an apartment with your own internal boiler then you might have a boiler problem. Can't your boss sort this out for you?
Ondol heating doesn't really make the air dry. It's simply Korean winters are very dry.
Got my first electro-static shock of the year 2 days ago. A sure sign winter is upon us. |

Probably, but it involves me pulling my finger out of a certain part of my anatomy. |

I am sure most of you have turned on your heating system by now, but was wondering for thoughs that live at your University's Dormitory, if they turned on the system yet? My rooms, all two of them, are pretty damn cold these days. |

Guess who has a toasty warm room now? I danced around my apt last night i was so happy. Went to bed in my undies for the first time in ages. Yay for me!!! And, now that the room is warm, i made some ginger beer, as it will be warm enough to do it. Winter is looking much more pleasurable now. |

Congrats on getting your ondol up and running... Hey, the old lady used to make ginger beer when I was a kid. Can you PM me or post here how to make it? It sounds yum.
BTW what was the problem with the ondol? |

I just asked all of the Korean teachers here at work, and they all agreed that it is cheaper to turn your heating on when you get home at night to around 21 degrees, and turn it off when you go out in the day. |
