bump.
I've decided on an Archos 605 Wifi. I want video & the ability to surf theweb, a good screen, and HD size doesn't matter to me because I can add or delete files I want to watch any time I want. I don't need to store 25 movies at one time.
I can't find it online in a store--only auction sites-- http://itempage3.auction.co.kr/DetailView.aspx?itemNo=a500136085&firstView=&DR030114=&hdcapital=&mobile=&frm3=V2
Do you know if this is because they don't sell them here and someone's importing them? I don't read Korean well, how come the following is 100,000 cheaper than the above?
http://www.expansys-kr.com/p.aspx?i=151267
And if I buy it from one of these online places, how do I go about asking if I can get the menu in English?

I own an iPod Touch and a Cowon D2.
My problems with iPods:
1. iTunes. Has there ever been a more restricting piece of software then this horrendous crap? It hogs your computer's resources to the point it crashes every other application running. Also, there's no "disk mode" in newer versions which means you can't use your iPod like an external drive (EVERY other MP3 player I've owned does this ). Also, the idea of adding files first to a "library" and then to your iPod is just idiotic. iTunes is NOT intuitive and it's impossible to manage your files through a regular "explorer". iTunes controls EVERYTHING.
2. Sound Quality. It's absolutely horrible on the iPod Touch I bought. I have a Cowon D2 and comparing the sound between them, the D2 blows the iPod out of the water. There's a constant hiss on the iPod and the sound presets on the iPod are horrible. How in the world does Apple get away with selling an MP3 player with the terrible SQ their iPods have??? Isn't Apple supposed to specialise in cutting-edge multimedia??????
3. Storage Capacity. 8, 16, and 32 GB??? NONE of them are enough storage space if you are a music enthusiast who is constantly collecting music files. Also, if you download music videos like the Apple marketing of iPod advertises, you will fill up even a 32 GB iPod quite quickly because it's mandatory for the iPod to convert them to huge MP4 files.
4. Price. iPods are ridiculously expensive. $$$$$$$$ |

It's too bad you are having problems with iTunes. I haven't had any problems with it at all. In any case, I believe the Touch is the only iPod you can't use as a drive, but there are workarounds for that. (Not that you should have to work around it.)
As far as needing to add things to iTunes, that is the price you pay for basically having instant start up. Other players (like the D2) are notoriously slow starting after adding new files.
2. Sound Quality. It's absolutely horrible on the iPod Touch I bought. I have a Cowon D2 and comparing the sound between them, the D2 blows the iPod out of the water. That's odd. My Touch sounds almost identical to my D2. I've done various listening tests with the same earphones and they both sound great to me. The hiss you are hearing is definitely related to the type of earphones youu have, fyi. Anyway, sorry to hear you don't like the sound. Maybe you got a bad one, or maybe your 'phones don't match up well with the Touch.
3. Storage Capacity. 8, 16, and 32 GB??? NONE of them are enough storage space if you are a music enthusiast who is constantly collecting music files. Well, obviously, if you need that much space, the Touch is a poor choice and you'd be better off with the Classic or perhaps the Zune.
4. Price. iPods are ridiculously expensive. $$$$$$$$
I disagree here. The Classic 80 is almost the same price as a Zune 80. The 32 gig Touch is expensive, but the 8 gig is quite reasonable considering the functionality (especially once jailbroken.) Anyway, at the end of the day, it sounds like you don't like the Touch and I don't expect to change your mind.

I changed my mind. Turns out you have to pay for the privilege of not having it be a brick. In other words, you have to pay $60 to have the option of surfing the net, then an extra $50-60 for any additional functionality. Apparently the only thing that is free after purchase is the power button. |

I was given a 20gb Archos Gmini xs202s last year by my brother. I really like it but as it's my first MP3 I've nothing really to compare it with.
With a few exceptions. It's only chargeable by usb. When I was trying to find chargers they were few and far between and cost a fair bit, maybe different now. If fully charged I can listen for 6 hours tops, a bit difficult for long distant trips. Not too bothered about the weight. My friends always like the toggle thing on it, and it looks a bit more traditional than others. Bulky and simple with less buttons.
Big problem, or not as some people might think, the volume really doesn't got that loud. On a plane it can be difficult to hear. Also I use it with these:
AKG K271Studio. Shame the volume doesn't match the quality of the headphone.
Overall, I'd take it over the popular ones any day. I don't want to be part of the "ipod generation." |

Have you looked into getting an amp? I think that would probably solve your problem. |

Hey guys long time no post
just been looking into getting an Archos 605 wifi after I dropped my Video Ipod 1 week after the warranty expired!!! Just my luck
Anyway, had such a bad experience with my Ipod, itunes, and all apple related software (no offense Apple heads, Im sure I will eventually see the light ) that Ive been doing some reaserch.
I like the 605 but it seems the price difference between here and stateside is 133 US dollars, way too big to just say whatever.
My question is, what do I have to do to avoid paying Import duties on this bad boy and on electronics in general. Some have said that anything under 300 bucks wont inccur the wrath of K-Customs others say that if you get someone to take it out of the packaging then its cool also. What are myths and which sound/are reasonable. (could be an interesting new thread)
Also, can anyone tell me if the Cowon Q5W is available in Korea, cause this looks like the mac daddy of PMPs but way too expensive abroad. Maybe in Korea the price may be better but cant find it at Danwa, GMarket, Naver etc.....
Thanks guys. |

I've seen the Q5 but the OS was just way too much. It's touch, but when you start to use it, you find that the menu just opens up into these itty bitty choices. The buttons are just too damn many and small. The salesguy didn't even know how to use it.
I saw it at ET Land, one of those Electronic Store chains in Korea. |

So, nobody knows how much tax I would have to pay on an Archos 605 4gb if I bought it from the states and had it delivered?
Also for the 4GB version, can I use as many SD cards as I like or is there a limit. |

Those are good headphones, but you need a headphone AMP to boost the volume because the built-in amp in the mp3 player is too weak (as with a lot of players). My Cowon D2 is pretty good powering my MDR-CD3000 and my extremely demanding Sennheisers. A portable AMP really does make a difference however if you have a weak audio player. |

Can't you get the Archos from eBay? They will send it over as a gift so you don't have to declare anything or be taxed for it, just as long as the value doesn't exceed $1000 or something. |

Thanks for the posts, Thunndarr and Rocklee!
How do I go about getting an amp. Yongsan? Is it expensive? Is it just a small adaptor that goes between the mp3 phono socket and the earphone plug?
Is it strange for mp3 to have a weak amp? Is it sacrificed for some other benefit in the mp3 player? |

Just let the seller know via messaging as well as all the usual things (reliability, seller's rating, return policy etc). It is sort of risky but that's eBay. I got a couple of things from Taiwan with no problems.
Have you actually tried any of the korean brands and models as there are a lot to choose from. |
