Music doesn't require melody or rhythm to be music.

Composers have been chugging out some amazing atonal/arhythmic/pointilist/minimal/textural music for a very long time now that definitely has the emotional range and impact of any song with a melody and a beat.

atonal arhythmic music...is actually defined as NOISE by science. Granted isn't industrial noise a genre of electronica now?
