While the Rust Belt has appeal, it is only temporary. (I'm an optimist.) Czar, you're guilty of setting up straw men. In spite of John Wayne (and Wyatt Earp and Buffalo Bill) Iowa is bib overall country, therefore Midwest. I'd say the line is the Missouri River. West of that, they wear cowboy boots rather than bibs. The north bank of the Ohio River and the Upper Mississippi River Valley are the Midwest.

The last poll I saw was McCain ahead by only 1% in Michigan, so it's anybody's game. We'll know results of the vote in a few hours. Go Romney/Huckabee!

Michigan could have been the first real test for the national election because the issue is economics. Iowa/New Hampshire were about ideals, which are nice, but elections are rarely about ideals. My prediction is that the main issue in the general election will be economics, not Iraq, which it hasn't been so far and without a new crisis, won't be. Elections are always about 'us' in the end, not 'them'.

Rust belt could work too, as parts of the south termed the Bible belt make the terminology viable. Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan as rust belt.

Yeah, that horse left the barn a long time ago.

Belt regions of the United States

Nice link.

The corn belt:

Hits that corner of Michigan, actually thats pretty much the area I was thinking of where I did remember seeing MI with corn. Iowa is smack-dab in the middle. Corn Belt and Midwest seem to be the two that are most associated confused/associated with each other in most people's minds.

Rust Belt:

Michigan and Ohio and Pennsylania are all over that, plus Buffalo NY.

Hm. Jello-Belt with Mormons (tying all of this with the election and NV):
