Call it what you want, and yes the fan was out-of-line going up there, but it ruined my respect for the band.

In my eyes, it's no different than some random guy on the street attacking a drunk/virtually defenseless person for fun. Only a total puss_y would do that.

Beating up? Huh? Some guy jumped on stage and Maynard slammed him down and choked him out (drunk, high, whatever - numbnuts shouldn't have interfered with the show). The cool thing is that Maynard continued to sing and didn't miss a note throughout the entire struggle. If anything, I respect Maynard more now. Very Happy

Yeah, um, and the fan loved it. That was the fan's fist pumping in the air in an, "Oh my god, Maynard is spooning me.... I hope someone's filming this" moment, not Maynard's fist beating on the fan's skull.

Agree with what many people have said. Their music has been therapy for many years. Don't listen to 10,000 days much, but love the artwork. It's definitely possible to overplay them and I think I did when I first came to Korea Wink Few years later I'm now getting back into them. Haven't seen em in concert. I was too poor in college to buy the $35 ticket to their show at my university's stadium... sigggghhhhh....

See my (1) and (2) analogy in the OP. Never known a band to be simple yet complex musically, barbaric and base yet transcendental and abstract. It's also totally not straight-up Rock. The guitar style is essentially Seattle/grunge but the drums and the musical agenda is Prog/transcendental. Neat combo.

Tool take the listener on a journey across space to another planet that's both hostile to us yet enchants us. Sorry for the pompous analogies here.

To guys like me who are into stuff that's beautiful yet barbaric - dinosaurs, nuclear weapons, kickass animals for example (guy stuff basically Mr. Green ) - Tool is awesome

I can't really comment on stuff that's not Lateralus yet because I need to take my time. I'm SO into Lateralus and am just gonna concentrate on that for a while and not get too much at once, but nevertheless, the bits and pieces I've heard from other albums sound average in comparison to Lateralus.

i've been a tool fan since undertow... they're still high on my list of faves, but i'm not as into them as i used to be... a quick album summary:

opiate: raw, loud, ferocious... 'jerk off' is pure angst
undertow: dark, moody, pessimistic... 'flood' is symbolic and angry
aenima: sprawling, epic, trippy... 'third eye' is tool at their very best
salival: live, revealing, passionate... 'no quarter' is a killer cover, great vocals
lateralus: optimistic, math rock-y, technical... 'the grudge' is a bludgeon
10 000 days: mature, riffy, groovy... 'right in two' is beauty and blare

The Grudge is my favorite thing in the world at the moment. It's beautiful barbarism.

IMHO, Maynard is probably the best rock vocalist of the past 25 years. His transitions from whispers to growls are effortless, his range is impressive, and his stage presence is formidable.

I really got into A Perfect Circle (Maynard leads that band). Mer De Noms and 13th Step are each great albums, yet each is musically different than each other. MDN is more raw, but also has beautiful, softer sounds you won't find on Tool albums (like "3 Libras"). 13th step is groovier and more of an "adventure" from start to finish, kind of like listening to a Pink Floyd album from start to finish.

A lot of people didn't like APC due to their softer sound, but I thought they were great. Except for their cover album (hell, it's so bad, I can't even remember the name of it!). The DVD they put out had a remix cd on it that was decent, it sounded like Trent Reznor got a hold of some songs.

I saw APC on their final show in 2004. It was wonderful, at Red Rocks Amphatheater in Colorado.

I thought there was a connection between A Perfect Circle and Tool, but I didn't realize it was Maynard being the vocalist for both. I've got an APC on my MP3 now called 'The Outsider' and that's quite good but not remarkable.

Thanks for those recommendations. I remember quite liking APC when they became famous in 1999 but never buying anything.

The Outsider is actually one of my least favorite APC songs. But the video for it is great.

The 2nd APC album has not only Maynard, but James Iha from the Smashing Pumpkins, Jeordy White (Twiggy Ramirez) from Marilyn Manson and the drummer from Devo.

Unfortunately, an ex-girlfriend (de facto) ruined Tool for me. Can't hardly stand to listen to them anymore without sh*tty associations...despite their obvious talent and prowess.

Radiohead, too. The double-whammy.

Sigh

Ever had that sort of thing happen to you?

(sigh) Yes, with Type O Negative...it's a shame too, because I put them right up there with Tool. But now when I listen to them (especially Bloody Kisses), I just want to turn it off, even though it's been years since we broke up.

Jesus guys WTF's going on here? You can't let stupid bloody women get in the way of quality rocking out!

If you can't get into rock titans like Tool and Type O Negative because of these silly emotions then you should abandon yourself to a monastry in the mountains.

Laughing

Dear me, I screwed the 'monastery' spelling there.

Anyway, Easter, I'm not trying to bring back memories, but I recently came across this TON performance of World Coming Down live.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=JN_BlF9Vtvw

It's freaking amazing! Shocked Not sure what happened to Kenny in the middle, but Peter going solo was brilliant anyway. They should fire Kenny! Laughing Just kidding. Kenny rules! I've met the guys in Brooklyn a couple of times. Drummer Johnny plays in a Led Zep covers band and they're very close to the real thing.

Back on Tool, with all due respect I can't fathom why any Tool fan would think Aenima is better than Lateralus. The former is obviously good because it's Tool but it's pretty much straight-up Grunge. Lateralus transcends!
