You can get a magic straight perm called volume straight here. They lift up the roots during the process to give it some volume. Plus, they can curl your ends in a bit if you don't want the deadpan straight hair.

It doesn't work on African hair. It's too fragile and will break off.

Had the magic volume straight and a hair cut today. Turned out well too. Was nervous going in...wasn't a very modern looking place. Only paid 80,000 for the 3.5 hours I was there.

Some types of African hair, but generally, you're right. African/black hair is really fragile and breaks easily under stress, so something like this might not work.

On the other hand, I know of some black girls who have gotten the Japanese hair straightener both in Japan and the states, so I guess it ultimately depends on your hair type and how willing you are to take a chance.

I went to 7th Street Salon close to Apgujeong Station. Tomo speaks English and the salon is beautiful. They work really fast too and are very delicate. www.7street.kr It cost me 150,000 including the trim.

I got it done in Seoul last June and my hair is still straight. It only cost me 50,000 including a cut and I didn't notice any damage to my hair whatsoever. I used to spend so long straightening my hair with an iron in the mornings just to have it go wavy again if it was raining or humid. Best money I ever spent on my hair!!

But yeah, you can't wash your hair for 48 hours which kinda sucks. You have to try to not get any water on it and you can't put pins or elastics in because it will make creases. Well worth it though.

Do you remember where you got it done? I'm on a bit of a budget and 130,000 won is a lot for me right now, but it does sound nice.

I got it done in Masan last Summer and it turned out fine, they didn't speak English but they understood "magic straight" and my hand gestures indicating how much hair I wanted trimmed first.

Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the salon but it was near Edae station, about halfway between the station and Ewha Womans University. There are tons of cheap salons tucked into the buildings there. The guy who did it didn't speak English, but I went with a Korean friend so she translated everything. I wouldn't pay 130,000 either if you can get it done for 50,000 with the same results.

i finally got it done, and i'm very happy with the results! i went to a nice-looking salon nearby (i live near a university), and it cost 80,000.

that includes:

*pre-treatment, vitamins for hair
*straightener
*trim (rather a haircut, she cut a lot)

Had it done Saturday, and I'm very happy so far. I have straight hair, but it had become quite frizzy.

I'm sure it damaged my hair somewhat, but before my hair was damaged and all over the place frizzy. Now it may be damaged, but everything is lying sleek and flat in the same direction!

ok, i think i've finally become brave enough to try a magic straight with my hair. could someone give me a name of an english-speaking salon in seoul where it costs around 80,000 or less? i think my hair will need a special strengthening treatment prior to this.

also, can you really not tie back your hair for 48 hours after this is done?? Shocked
