What? No one liked Men At Work?

Glad to see someone mention Billy Idol and Big Audio Dynamite! Fun Stuff!

I don't think anyone has mentioned John Mellencamp yet either.

No MJ fans either, I guess that should not be a surprise.

The Police? or are they too 70s?

Hall and Oates?

Its gotta be Maddona, right?

There was a lot of fun music in the early 80s but great music, that is much harder to say.

Yeah, John Cougar should be on my list as well as The Police. I left U2 off on purpose, however. I just never enjoyed anything they did after Under a Blood Red Sky. Most of my bands are new wavey but I could be compelled to add some hard rock. Def Leppard for example. I actually convinced a reader of my blog that the first dance at her wedding, as man and wife, should be to Def Leppard's Pour Some Sugar On Me.

Yeah, there was already that thread about U2 and REM so I left them out as well.

I was thinking Def Leppard too.

I was just listening to some internet radio and they mentioned that Pat Benatar was the biggest selling female artist of the 80s, hard to believe she sold more than Maddona though, the DJ must have gotten that wrong.

The funny part about the 80s is that it seems many of the biggest selling albums of that era were all by 70s artists: MJ, Billy Joel, David Bowie, Heart, the Police, Dire Straights, YES, Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, Lionel Ritchie; I'm sure I'm forgetting someone....

It seemed like they all came back for atleast one big album and cash out.

Oh yeah...

Bruce Springstien, Phil Collins, Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Queen, Robert Plant, Don Henley, Glen Fry, Stevie Wonder, Foreigner and Lou Gramm, J. Geils Band and Peter Wolf, Journey and Steve Perry, Bob Segar, Steve Miller, Jackson Browne, the Pointer Sisters, Donna Summer, Diana Ross...all 70s artists who had at least one big hit in the 80s.

Even artists like the Talking Heads and the Cars got their start in the 70s.

Australian and NZ rock and pop became very popular during the 1980s soooo - will honour these as well as other acts

Midnight Oil (Is diesel and dust one of the greatest albums of all time? I think so)
INXS
Mental as Anything
Split Enz/Crowded House
The Black Sorrows
Jimmy Barnes
Men at Work
1927

Some British acts

Bananarama
The Specials
Fun Boy Three
Madness
Altered Images (Listen to them if you have never heard them)
Tracy Ullman (They don't know - is just a perfect pop song)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4K1xnVFxfw0
Dexys Midnight Runners
Blancmange
Gary Numan and the Tubeway Army
The Human League
Heaven 17 (Come live with me)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_ca1JXmfCw
ABC (Be near me)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxcpDR6drHk
Toyah Wilcox
Bad Manners

I can think of many more... but my brain has gone into deep freeze!

I would love to say that we listened to great tunes everyday on the radio but the 1980s radio meant listening to Rick Astley, Shaking Stevens and
'The Birdie Song' 50 times a day! Evil or Very Mad

I though this was an eighties thread. The Sex Pistols broke up in 1978.

Don't forget Tears for Fears, guys.

Albums The Hurting, Songs from the big chair and Seeds of love all contain essentials.

I consider Depeche Mode a 90s band really because their most revered albums - Violator in particular (but Ultra from 1997 is my favorite) - were 90s albums.

See also the Pet Shop Boys. They were a great group until they became uber-pooftas with dancing sailors etc. Jesus, way to alienate your heterosexual fans, eh? However their songs Love comes quickly and Violence are exceptional.

no they weren't, and there was a whole other thread pitting them against the equally dull REM. maybe you didn't see it. (and i say that trying to be as non-message-board-condescending-fruit as possible).

The Clash? Most definitely.

BAD? I'm not so sure. With the exception of E=MC2 their stuff hasn't aged particularly well.
