I'd say that a modern HDD which hasn't been dropped and/or overheated should last years.

I would be disappointed if one of mine crashed in under 5 years.

The 10,000 hours thing would be bad news for me. If it's an accurate real-world estimate (I don't think it is with the modern models). I run both my PC's 24/7, 365 days. That would give me just over a year of reliable HDD use!!! Mad No way.


3 years warranty on average for most of them and I usually burn one or two up about every year or so but they get HEAVY, constant use (like file server), not just idling with the computer on.

At the moment I have 4 Samsung 501LJ - 500GB drives and 2 WDC WD7500AACS 750GB drives and they are all getting a workout.

I recently burned up a couple WD5000AAKS drives from overwork.
