G8 summit opens in Northern Ireland tomorrow. How times have changed. Ten years ago it would have been utterly inconceivable. Christ, pop stars wouldn't even include the place on their tours. Now it's hosting the G8.

Shows you what a few years can do.

So Keenan is gone, now Paisley is gone. Brendan Hughes is gone. Thatcher is gone. Bobby Sands is....oh, right. The sooner the Adams and McGuinness join them, and Northern Ireland can continue putting the past behind it, the better.

Let's just hope for a "No" vote in Scotland on Thursday. A yes victory could reignite the whole thing. Good thing is, though, that even if a "Yes" vote wins Scotland will not become a republic. It will keep the Queen as Canada, Oz, New Zealand, Jamaica and Bermuda do. It will remain a constitutional monarchy (at least for the forseeable future). If it attained republican status outside the UK, without being partitioned, it would encourage Irish republicans. And that would set back the creation of a shared, common "Northern Irish" identity. And that's what Northern Ireland really needs.
