I don't think Americans who put flags on their front porches are jackasses, not at all. I think it's cool, actually.

and likewise, I don't think that putting a symbol of your country that you are proud of on your bag is anything to ridicule or be embarassed about.

You're right. A flag here and there really isn't that big of a deal.
However, there does seem to be a positive correllation between level of nationalistic fervor and general jackassery. Living in Korea I imagine you've seen this for yourself, if not from Americans or Canadians at least from the locals.

Americans and Canadians have a lot to be thankful for, and I'm not going to piss on the memory of the men who fought in WWI and WWII by saying nationalism is for suckers.

Most people wouldn't be such big talkers if they were inside a veterans/legion hall.

I think you might be surprised just how many disillusioned, bitter veterans would agree that nationalism is nothing but a tool used by governments. Especially when said veterans have been treated like shit by their fellow citizens and their government after returning home from war. My father being one. (I notice you chose not to mention the unpopular wars...)

Your passive-aggressive ad hominem does you no credit.

I was speaking of Canada's wars, not America's.

I stand by what I said about pot smokers and opening a history book.

There may be some disgruntled vets out there, but I doubt there are many from WWII, or that there were from WWI.

This picture is has some truth to it.

I was driving in one of the southern states many years ago when I stopped for gas. When I went in to pre-pay the gas station owner told me that she only sells gas to Christians and that I would need to prove that I was a Christian in order to buy anything. I was dumbfounded to say the least, especially since there were very few gas stations around and that we really needed to fill up at this one. I told her that I didn't know how to do that and she said she would only let us buy gas from her if we could recite to her what John 3:16 was, because that would prove we were Christians. Luckily for me, I was brought up with years of Sunday school so I recited it perfectly. The lady was hesitant but then said she still wasn't convinced that we were Christians but she would have to let us buy gas.

I see where this picture is going, and I think we should roll with it. It's win-win! We lose all the jerks, and Canada triples their population while sintupling their GNP.

You've got it right there except for Nevada.
In Vegas there's people up and down the blvd. handing out ads for "escorts" all the time. That's cool. Prostitution? A-OK.
Now religious pamphlets? Jail time for you pal.
Seriously, this actually happened. Laughing
Public disturbance, or causing a nuissance, or some such thing.
Pretty funny.

Canada and Mexico are not countries, they are parts of the U.S. with slightly different rules.

No, you cannot distingush an educated Canadian from an educated American. Except, of course, for French Canadians (but no one likes them - unless they're sexy women).

Canadians have their flag patches because they are loathe to accept that they do not have their own culture, they are just lucky Americans.

Y'know, I always wondered "What's up with Canadians? Why do they always have a chip on their shoulder? Why do they always seem to have something to proove? Why do they think America is out to get them, when most of us really don't care, and even have fond feelings towards our northern neighbors?" Then I read some (not all) of the Americans in the various "Canada vs. USA" threads floating around these boards....
America's the well known country, not Canada. Canadians want the spotlight.

I think I kind of feel the same way, cause I wanna work and probably live in the states, cause, well, what's Canada got? Higher taxes and not much else

I don't think Canadian nationalism is restricted to drunks in Korean bars. When I was in Canada, there were plenty of nationalists on TV. That still doesn't get them hundreds of millions, but because of the population size.

You'd think a picture extolling the vitues - sarcastically or otherwise - of a gun-obsessed culture would at least show the weapon being held correctly!
