So, can the hwacha really fire 200 arrows 500 yards?

I saw the movie 신기전 (shin-gi-jeon) with English sub-titles at Yongsan CGV theater. What a shit movie. Even the Koreans were laughing embarrassedly. They had had huge projectiles from the shin-gi-jeon flying through the air, great plumes of smoke coming out their rear like intercontinental ballistic missiles, and making huge explosions that created mushroom clouds.

Most hwacha were built for 100 rocket arrows, but there are records of those with more. Having a range of 500m or more is quite believable. I asked a couple family members in the States to record it for me; although it will undoubtedly be on the web soon after it airs, I wanted to be able to see my microsecond of screen credit Very Happy

For those so inclined, mininova has the torrent and it downloads quickly, from what 've been told. The season is 6 and the episode is 16.

Just watched it - nice work Bluelake. Saw you in the credits as well - knock two more seconds off your 15 minutes of fame.

While watching the hwacha take flight was an awesome spectacle, Adam running on the treadmill drunk, then falling and busting his @ss, stole the show for me. Not to mention the slow-motion replay of the slap delivered to Adam's face by Jamie.

Was he risking all-out war with China by doing so?

I don't actually know anything at all, but I'll chime in on this one. Were the Manchus "China" at this time? I thought the Ming were in charge during early Joseon. If Sejong was battling the Manchus in the north, wouldn't it just mean that the Ming had one less group of northern "barbarians" to worry about?

Actually, they weren't exactly "Manchus" at that time. They were known as the Jurchen (Korean 여진:女眞--generally referred to as 야인, "barbarians"). They descended from the Malgals (말갈) and eventually formed the Jin (금:金) dynasty in 1115. In any case, King Sejong established six garrisons up by the Yalu, which firmly established what we know today as the northern border of the Korean peninsula (this last part you can read in Eckert, et al. Korea Old and New: A History).
