How about freedom? Freedom of speech, assembly, thought. The United States is an incredibly free country, despite the solid attempts of Bush et al to make it less so.
Or the universities? Even mediocre state schools provide an excellent education, and are often quite affordable. And of course the Ivy's, Stanford, Berkley, Hopkins, Georgetown and a dozen or so excellent liberal arts undergrad institutions.
Or the dynamism? Private equity, venture capitalists and private/public scientific organizations are pushing green technology forward at an astonishing pace. The US leads the world in medical research leading to a dramatic decrease in mortality from all causes around the world.
Or the diversity? New Orleans and Salt Lake exist in the same country. A black man will become president. LA has an East Indian gov, NM a Mexican, California an Austrian and NY a blind black dude.
Or the solid progress? Again, a black man as president. Ask an old black dude if he ever thought that possible. How long ago was Rosa Parks and MLK? Gays are gaining ground as a normalized group. The culture is adapting to Hispanic demographics. Discrimination and racism are a national obsession at almost every level.
Bush sucks. Yeah, we know. But a little balance would be nice. |

I suppose that had this comment been made about any other group on earth you'd be the first to jump on the "not all" bandwagon. Anyways, what a stupidass little comment.

What's right about America -- certainly isn't CNN. LOL. The most ignorant news agency around.

"LOL"? Now I get it. |

We are talking "generalities" , I assume you know the difference.
There is lots "good" about America but I would say little "right".
Please note the difference between "the good" and "RIGHT". I won't explain it, just think about it. Also, please compare the amount of American expenditure on hair care products with that of higher education AND medical research. You might be surprised.
Which is the point I will outline next. That America is consumed with Quantity. How much, getting, acquiring, consuming -- it is not about How to, using, maintaining, processing.... Wisdom is in quality and its appearance in the world. Quantity is of violence, domination and ultimately insecurity and fear.
Heraclitus summed it up with "latent structure rules obvious". But enough quotations, I'll stay in the mud but first address my above requests. (without the necessary ad hominems about "amount" and "much" concerning America.

Mises,
Don't bother. The thread is about the good things about America and Ddeubel can't help but dwell on the things he doesn't like. That says it all.
Ddeubel,
Your critique of America is common and pedestrian. Quantity? I mean can you stop reading off the Euro anti-American playbook and give us something a little more fresh? Yeah, America likes McDonalds. Good one. |

Besides, it's a lot easier for a European to be 'well travelled' since you only have to drive a few hours to get to a border. It would take me at least 12 hours to get to the nearest border from my home and then I'd only be in Canada--not all that much different. |
Multilingual "cultured" and well travelled Europeans generally appear be just as lost and befuddled in Asia, and just as vulnerable in Africa or South America. Outside the western sphere, I've seen "stupid" Americans do just as well, if not better, in many cases. |
