I like MD much better, I've never really considered buying an mp3 player. On my MD I can easily record from pretty much any medium. Mp3's do only one, thats why they're called mp3 players. Only about half of my MDs were recorded from mp3. I've never had a problem recording any mp3's onto MD, though I guess it does happen from whats been said here.
As far as amount of music, carrying 2-3 MDs gives me more portable music playtime than I'm ever going to need in one go. 10+ hours? The only place I ever am for 10 hours straight where listening to music is possible is home, where I don't need a portable device.
MDs still have some life left in them I think. They'll never be the standard technology of course, but they have a loyal following of users. Mp3 players may eventually take away this user base but it will be some time I think. |

And just remember, when your Ipod/computer goes ass-up, which it will eventually, you'll have to download ALL THOSE SONGS again, whereas my minidiscs will always be with me, lovingly cared for, for all eternity.
If you were a writer, would you store your manuscript on a hard drive only? Nope, you'd have hard copies all over the place.
MD rules the day. Yet again. |

So, what's the deal with this little gem? It's the Sony Atrac3. You can buy one Stateside for $84. At Carrefour they're W148,000.
Another item which would appear to make the Ipod redundant. |

I can think of no area where MDs are better than MP3s.
MP3 players are cheaper, more functional, faster, hold more music, are less likely to break down and over all sound better.
Not to mention universal support. |

live recording....
recording mp3 players are rare (i think only the ipod can do it) and the quality is not as good as an md. |

Sure. If you buy an expensive chip, which you will later lose or damage because it is small and [more] fragile than an MD (which I can replace for pennies).

In what ways?

Sure. If you have a galvanized steel MP3 player. A ton of my students have these things and they are frequently broken (the "toggle stick" and cheap plastic casing spring to mind).

Of course they are. They're an inferior product.
The only reason to buy an MP3 is if you listen to music whilst playing sports. The MP3 player fills this niche sublimely. |

My iRiver IHP140 rocks- it's got a 40gig hard drive on it. Let me just say that again 40 gigabytes.
Sounds fantastic, the battery lasts an awful lot longer than the ipod, I can record sound in great quality for up to 5 hours, hit stop, then record for another 5 hours straight afterwards, do i need to go on?
MD is just pointless. (IMHO) |

Here's the deal, both MD and Ipods have their cons and pro's I mean an Ipod is wicked cause you've got 20 gigs you store a shitload of data on that besides just putting on your tracks.
With the MD players you can just buy a new disk fill it up when you need. Not to mention that you change what you've got on your disc. Also if you buy a MD player you can record analog sources.
I'm a DJ so for me the MD was the right choice since I can record analog sources like turntables live music interviews and the list goes on. While at the same time fill up the discs with compressed digital audio. And its super handy that it can also run on one single AA batery for when your really traveling if that's ur thing.
Only down side is that the program sony suplies sucks ass, because of the copy right protection. But not that difficult to use though... but if you look around you can find other progs that will work better.
For more info consult www.minidisc.org
Cheers!
NOTE the smaller MP3 players do suck unless u want one where you can fit 30 songs on and have to change them around all the time. Because 30 songs get repetitive quite fast. And yes you can buy a bigger mem card but why not spend the money wiser and buy the MD player or Ipod? |

While the iRiver is a better deal that the iPod, due to the larger size and battery life (though I don't know if the battery is swapable for when it dies), it still suffers from a critical flaw: That being the hard drive.
Hard drives are not something you want in a mobile device that is jarred around. One hard hit at the wrong time, and BOOM! Heads smash into the platters and it's all over. The failure rate of iPods is far above and beyond that of any other portable music player on the market.
Last I checked, both the iRiver and iPod had Hitachi drives in them, and Hitachi only a week ago said that their current micro-drives used in portable music devices have an unacceptably high failure rate in portable devices because they were meant to be used in laptops. It's pretty much the sole reason that Apple hasn't publicly announced who makes the drives in their iPods as Hitachi wants to avoid negative exposure from the failures.
So in the end, it comes down to how you want to live. I prefer MD because the battery life is huge, tiny, and exceptionly durable. While it would be nice to have all my songs in one place like an iPod or iRiver, I'm simply not prepared to pay a higher price for something that is excepted to fail years sooner.
Though Hitachi, earlier this week when saying how much their current hard drives do indeed suck in portable music devices, have promised their next generation of drives will last at least twice as long during regular use and will survive G forces substantially higher than the current models, so perhaps next year I might look into picking up a hard-drive based mobile unit. Though it's more likely I'll grab the new Sony MD unit that comes out in two weeks that has a gigabyte per disc and can be used as a data storage device too. |

| Or, if someone's really into economy, there's the trusty CD-Mp3 player, playing 150~200 songs for 30 hours+ on two AA batteries. They're selling them for as low as $25US at Best Buys in the States. I have an Iriver model, but I also picked up a spare Panasonic unit while in the US last month for $50US. And no, it never skips. |

I agree with Lemon! I love my MP3 CD player, and I even got one in my car, so I switch between the car and the portable, it's great!
Not to mention using the CD in my computer, if necessary, and I also have a PDA that can play MP3s as well.
Solid state flash memory has already reached the 2 gig mark. Pretty soon, I think even hard drive mp3 players will be outdated. |
