I once suggested to a man in an airport that he not smoke, especially since smoking there was prohibited and he was sitting next to an infant in a baby-chair. He very politely told me that if I didn't like it, then I should go outside. That's where all the fresh air is, anyway.

Inconsiderate? I don't know. What I have decided is I will obey the law , to the letter. If I can't smoke in a bar I will smoke outside the door. If I have to be 5 feet from the door I will be 5 feet . If you are 4 feet away with your baby...well I'm 5 feet from the door and I can smoke here. I'm sorry but I didn't make the rules---YOU DID.


Another I word is intolerance but that horse long ago left the barn.

Another issue is the question of litter. HAHA. Sorry but a cigarette butt is thin paper and tobacco powder which the rain will wash away. Now we smokers are destroying the planet. Forget fossil fuel and mountains of garbage the size of Everest. It's all the fault of smokers.

Funny, when the OP was talking about who was Righteous, I bet he didn't expect so many smokers and their high horses to ride into town.

tom waits: i appreciate your respect for the law, but i have to ask: are you rolling your own smokes? 99.9% of cigarettes have filters, which are definitely not biodegradable. butts everywhere (not to mention the monster loogies that are outdoors and INDOORS (jesus h christ!) in this country) are an eyesore. the best solution is when you're done your smoke, roll out the burning ember and keep the butt in your pocket or your hand or a ziploc baggie until you find a garbage can (i know, it stinks... too bad). why do smokers think they have the right to litter?

My father was a chain smoker for the last 62 of his 77 years and died of lung cancer this summer.

It was tragic? His body was resilient? The result was obvious? No clear answer, just the questions.

Should the reason make me feel sad? reconciled? angry?

If someone tells you you should quit smoking it doesn't necessarily mean they are being self-righteous. they could have lost a loved one and are expressing that they care.

(Though I suspect the anti-smoking lobby and the anti-obesity lobby often share an ignorant distance from the issue, less motivated by good motives and more holier-than-thou condescension.)
