While the United States does have a large portion of the overweight to obese population of the world, it is unfair to say "geez, Americans are so fat" when the obesity rates all over our "western" world are skyrocketing. The British Isles also have a weight problem, as does Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and Canada. One of the fastest growing rates is in France. France was tradionally one of the "thin" nations. Even South Korea made the top 30 fattest countries.

It isn't quite fair to say that just the Americans are fat or obese. A lot of "developed" countries are facing the same health crisis.

If other countries have a large obesity rate, it is probably from American style food.

It is a problem, unique to modern American culture, and thus needs to be recognized as one. I feel that skinny people get a tougher time than fat people in America.

Besides being unhealthy to the obese individual, it is also a waste of resources. Besides eating more, the person also uses more food containers, cans, and other harmful environmental packaging.

There should be a strong cultural backlash to the amount of obesity in America. And I am from America, and love the country, but hate our ignorance on obvious issues.

However, someone close to me recently had a heart attack and Im aware eating greasey bacon sandwiches for breakfast everyday could well send me the same way. But nothing else comes close to satisfying me and I dont have the time for cereal.

Walk into the kitchen: 5 seconds
Get a bowl and a spoon: 10 seconds
Take out the box of cereal and carton of milk: 10 seconds
Pour cereal and milk into the bowl: 10 seconds
Put away cereal and milk: 10 seconds
Wash the bowl and spoon: 20 seconds

Aside from eating the cereal, it shouldn't take more than 1:05 to prepare cereal.

Anyways, when I'm not lazy and eating healthy/exercising, I tend to go for a high carb low fat diet. I usually stick with complex carbs and fruit but avoid sucrose and high fructose corn syrup. You lose weight faster with a low carb diet, but those tend to be pretty unhealthy. Using protein as your main source of energy is a good way to destroy your kidneys and clog your arteries.

For a healthy breakfast, I recommend a bagel with peanut butter, a bowl of oatmeal or granola, or a slimfast shake.

Im THAT lazy. It is easier to go to the deli next to work and buy a sandwich, suppose I cant really complain.

Yoga is working out brilliantly for me at the moment, in a lot of ways. And I suppose the large amounts fruit Im eating must be doing something good too.

Ive also been eating a large lunhc and having a lunch-sized dinner. I find eating more helps when Im teaching if you know what I mean. I teach a direct-method so am constantly on the go so need (and maybe use up) the energy from eating a lot during the day. At night I have a sandwich or light soup.

The whole grain bread instead of refined grain bread is a good idea (# 3), but:

1) the melon recommendation isn't exactly a breakthrough: it's low in calories? Yeah, well so are most fruits. It's high in potassium? Again, so are a lot of fruits.

2) the study of women who drink one glass of wine per day having a smaller waist than heavy drinkers is purely correlational; there's no evidence given that the wine is the cause. It could just as easily be that heavy drinkers also eat more.

4) I wasn't paying attention by the time she got to grapefruit.

Plus (and here's the rub), you cannot spot burn fat. Can't be done. Create a calorie deficit in your diet through a combination of portion control and exercise, and you begin burning fat for energy. The fat burns all over your body - not just in your gut.

This is true. People that claim they 'burned' the fat on their arms just tightened their muscles. You cant isolate fat in one are of the body, although you can burn it allover and tighten the muscles in one area (like your abs or gluts). I have pretty good 'fat displacement' for my body, but if I chunk up at all my face looks fat so I'm always trying to burn it for that reason, but, of course, I have to workout for my overall BMI
