| I think you are lookinfg at it from the perspective of SK still being run by commie lovers like Roh or Kim. Obviously things have changed. Now the ball is in NK's court. Its an interesting move, it sure does call the DPRK's bluff since they said it would be considered a declaration of war. |

Mises when are you going to realize that North Korea is OUR problem and not just a Chinese Korean problem. From your posts you havent got a clue what the hell your talking about.
Geeguess where the Iranians got their initial Ballistic missle tech from?
Gee, who was caught helping the Syrians from nuclear tech? gee who has been lending missile know how and tech to many nations that are "the westss" problems? NORTH KOREA.
People like you need to learn that gone is the day where problems could be confined to one section of the globe.
Furthermore, it is directly our problem as well.. Im guessing you dont pay attention much, but if North Korea ever does manage to perfect a 3 stage taepodon missile, they will be able to hit the continental US.
SO given the above, it is our problem..
and as far as your critiqie of the military situation, or 3rd world boondoggles as you called them..your just an armchair quarterback who has no clue how real war fighting works or is done. |

Doesn't NK use the phrase "declaration of war" or "act of war" all the time to describe SK/USA/Japanese policies that they don't like? |

I don't think America can afford to start anything in NK.
Even drawing down in Iraq and keeping things going in Afghanistan is going to keep us financially occupied.
But even if it could, I don't think invading NK is worth it given that they have only a handful of nuclear weapons. |

Agreed. No matter how massive Obama's political capital might be right now, there's no way the American public would stomach another war on foreign soil (unless the reasons for war were a direct attack on Americans). |

No, that isn't true. If KDJ or Roh were still in office, the South would not even be talking about joining the PSI. However, I haven't heard any public discussion of what to do about the North's missile launch. At this point, I don't see any public move in the direction of supporting a naval confrontation with the Norks. The sense that I'm getting is frustration and a desire to wait in hopes of something else coming along.

Yes, they do. About every third day or so. However, this time the Norks would be correct in saying that boarding their ships on the open sea would be an act of war. It is an act of war. |

Never. I'll never realize that. Because it isn't true, or, to the extent it is true, it is only true because the United States hasn't yet figured out how to extract itself from wars that ended 50+ years ago.

Exactly.
For years now I've been arguing that all this empire stuff, which fun to discuss in IR class, is now without merit (if there ever was merit). The United States (a country I deeply admire, in case our friend Gopher returns) is broke. Sad to say, yes. But it is broke. More broke than broke. It is in debt up to her ears and quite literally falling apart from the inside out. The delusions of empire and such must die or the US will continue to see her standard of living decrease. |

Sadly, I think Mises is correct. It's not sad because we must give up our aspirations towards empire (that was misguided and untenable from the start), but that America going down will take so many down with her. This will unfold in ways we cannot yet predict.
Hope for the best. |

Do you actually think the DPRK would launch a first strike at the US?

Nor did the last group in charge, apparently. But yes, I don't know how "real war fighting" goes down. I do, however, know how bankruptcy goes down.
See, there are lots of things I'd like to do. I'd like to buy a 10 room flat in Montreal and never work. I wouldn't mind exploring India for a couple years and sending a middle finger to my career. Hell, I wouldn't mind getting an off the lot F150. But my balance sheet won't allow it, so I have to be realistic in my goals and actions. Same goes for the United States. |

Wouldn't that be fun?
Though, I'd probably be a "gold bug" and back my mises-bucks with the yellow stuff. Gotta have a long term outlook in life. |
