Americans pay zero tax in their first year. And only about 2-3% tax in their second year? There was a recent post about the Korean Tax office requiring all foreigners to pay the higher tax rate, after 2 years, with proof of residency demands. Canadians get taxed by their government.

Well, I too am considering China despite being just accepted into SMOE.

It's in Shanghai, a place I've visited but didn't love...preferred Beijing really. 11,000 RMB a month, free apartment if you live in the suburbs, no apartment if you live downtown, flights, etc. Unpaid 3 week vacation which is uncool. But hours and pay wise (factoring in cost of living) it seems comparable to SMOE.

I suppose the dilemma for me is...the unknown vs the known. New excitement vs some feeling of "comfort" (if you can call it that).

Both start Sept 1 interestingly enough. Feels like a fork in the road.

I believe the poster "pest" from this board spent some time with this particular business. He didn't like it too much. Others seem OK with it.

So there is an offer on the horizon to work in China. It pays 10,000 cny (1.8million Korean Won equivelant) and included housing in Guongzhou. I'm considering taking it. It's a bit less money that I'd make staying here but I think that type of money would go a lot further there than it would here in Seoul. I guess I should add that it is for 25 teaching hours per week.
Anyone ever worked in China and want to throw their two cents in? How are the working conditions there? Is that an adequate salary? Could I save? What else is there that I should be considering that I'm probably not considering?
I guess my biggest reason for wanting to go there is because I want a new experience.
Thanks for any input or feed back.

I am making the move to China as well. I went to China for ten days a couple of weeks ago to interview with some universities (currently teaching at a uni in Korea). Went to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzou.

I decided to work in Beijing. Whether it is different or similar to Korea has yet to be seen; however, the much need change in my life is very welcomed.
