What Itaewonguy said is a popular belief among Koreans. Some Koreans believe the US is purposely instigating conflict between the North and the South so that they can sell weapons to SK.

These Koreans honestly believe that SK doesn't need the weapons to defend themselves because NK would never attack the South.

The US having a presence in South Korea is strategic. You do realize that the US AND the SK armed forces do JOINT exercises.

Here's a likely scenario if US pulls out of Korea:

US pulls out of SK. A few years later NK invades. US goes to back SK.

Who's in command? US generals? SK Generals? Are Koreans familiar with US operating procedures and vice versa? Who executes missions? Who defends? Who attacks?

Having the US here allows the US and SK military command work with each other so that they keep confusion to a minimum.

Besides Strategic benefits, having a base in SK provides MANY advantages. First off, SK is a much better base of operations than Japan in a war against China. Almost all males in SK has had military training. SK has the ports, infrastructure, and the capabilities to support a large US military presence.

SK would be a base of forward operations, where Japan would act as a base for rear positions (hospitals, supplies, etc...)

SK is easily defensable. No navy in the world can come close to matching the US, so the only real threat to SK would be from the north. You can't ask for a more fortified border than the DMZ. Its not like the NK's can just walk across the DMZ. There are minefield, fences, trenches, and all sorts of bad things separating the north and south.

Good points, especially the DMZ argument.

Would China take advantage of a US withdrawal to assimilate N.K. ?
What do you think?

I hate the attitude by some Koreans that believe the South is an occupied nation. Your government CHOOSES to have the US here. Don't play the victim card with me.

Koreans are comfortable with victimhood, they crave it.
Which is why I say just pull the troops out. Its been 60 years now and Koreans still DON'T GET IT. They just don't get it. Leave them.

I guess thats my point as well.

If they feel they are the victim, then don't continue to make them one.

The US continues to believe in the B2 bomber and that doesn't need to be in korea.

Plus, every Male seems to be military trained, I mean even if N.Korea holds the country for a month, they won't hold it for a year.

They will be lucky to hold thier own country. The men in thier 40's are seriously hard arsed in some issues. (Thats not sexual) (i wouldn't start a fight with those I have met) (some are serious in a bad way).

Some radicals even adopt the Pyongyang line and call SK a puppet state.

In one thread everyone claims that South Korea's economic development is all due to American patronage.

In this thread everyone states that 'SK is a puppet state' is radical garbage.

What do these have in common? A dislike of Korea and a need to put the Koreans down. That and no intellectual consistency. Come on Korea haters, do better.

That being said, thank goodness this place is a puppet state or whatever the bleedin blazes it is. Or whatever it is not...the point is things have turned out okay here, that nutball to the north and his million men with AKs have been rendered increasingly marginal, and SK is a nice place to live.
