Can any Overnet users tell me how to set up ports for overnet on XP? Or link me to a FAQ that will help.

I'm sure my XP firewall is slowing Overnet down.

I'm curious how you reached this conclusion.

Letting the search run for 12 days is a touch excessive, plus I don't believe it runs for more than a few seconds before stopping.

I fail to see why you want to "challenge me" when you can download Overnet yourself and see if it has what you want. I'm not on any crusade to tell you what P2P software you should or should not be using.

Personally, Kazaa bothers me because it mostly polls local machines and takes quite a bit of effort to get outside the local neighborhood thus there are limits on the number of files available. I tried WinMX ages ago and pretty much agreed with everyone else that it sucked, but you seem to like it.

I like Overnet because it tries to keep the entire inventory of what files are online available to everyone so I can get more rare stuff far easier. Especially useful now that Japanese CDs are being sold in Korea so I can find out who people like "Zard" are before I blindly drop 13,000 on a CD when neither I nor the CD store clerk have heard of her.

My only crusade is to get people to stop sampling MP3s at crappy 128kbps and start doing 196kbps or higher. All my stuff is win WMA at 300kbps and it's CD quality. CQ quality because I care.

When I start up Overnet I get a pop-up which says,

"overnet has detected a firewall which may affect the performance of the program"

I rarely get good D/L speeds and the program itself seems really CPU hungry. It really slows down my computer. Much more than Kazaa.

I suggest getting a new computer or at least more memory. I run overnet 24/7 and doesn't take any cpu/memory from what I'm doing. I'm using a p4 2.8 Ghz 512 RAM though. But the system only cost me 790,000 at technomart. (Jooyontech, slim model, looks cool).

About the firewall.

Right click on your network connection.

Advanced tab: uncheck the box for protecting your computer

Don't worry, I've had the box unchecked for years on every computer and never had a hacker. If you feel worried, recheck it when your done.

This should improve Overnets performance for you.

Also, they're some tweaks you can do to the settings. Do a search for speedup

That message is more of an advisory of what may happen than saying it will happen. Most commercial firewalls can set limits on how much data is passed through some ports. Many places now are limiting data speeds on data coming from specific port ranges so that P2P software doesn't impact others from noticing a decrease in speed.

On a simple home connection and from any major Korean ISP, this will simple never be a problem.

By default, Overnet allows for a high number of users to be connected and a low KB/s limit. Thus most connections will be of low speed. It's also much more agressive in getting extra sources than Kazaa, so while in Kazaa you'll be downloading off 1-2 people generally at 10K each, you'll get downloading off 10-20 people in Overnet at 1K each, just for example.

By default, I believe it's set to have 75 connections and a 75KB/s transfer limit. So if I am hosting common files, then they will fill up quickly and everyone gets 1K a second. Though I have had examples of more than 100K from an individual person when downloading rare stuff that not everyone and their dog is trying to get.

I found Kazaa to be much more whorish in CPU usage. On my super computer, it generally ran with about 40% processor load when I had a large list of things I wanted (such as blindly downloading everythingwhen I want to know what stuff a foreign singer has done). Currently Overnet on my machine is using 15% for a mass downloading festival. Not that I would notice because I have hyperthreading and it's downloading to the non-primary drive.

I got really excited about all this, Got the megapass, new monitor and I found out this stuff lacks and horribly so. I spend hours downloading and I get a bag of popcorn and I find out the .avi wont play or its corrupted or the sound doesnt work.

Why are these files so bad? Do I have download 6 movies or sitcoms to one that works? my biggest accomplishment so far is dozens of beavis and butthead and celebrity death match on ARES and they only work in that viewer. Recommend something, please.

Mad

I'm guessing you haven't installed a video codecs pack. Try searching for Ace Mega codecs pack on the net. It sorted out everything for me.
