What Canada do you live in? In my Canada, assuming a full time job $7 an hour, 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, you would pay about $1300 in taxes. Or about 9% of your income.

That, without considering deductions for things like business related expense deducations, tax credits, and GST rebates.

Give me a break sorry to rain on your parade. You would think reading this it was Conrad back from the heart of darkest Africa...You were in Korea for a few months for Gods sake.!!! Korea barely qualifies as foriegn---it is more like a foreign area in a big city. A pathetic little Koreatown in LA or Toronto. In fact LA would be a hell of a lot more adventurous than going to Korea again.. Enjoy the posts William but go somewhere more interesting and get back to us...(If you want to get cash here OK but dont give us the big adventure thing---it aint..cheers...)

Hasn't globalisation just killed sooo much excitement? I mean, if you can hang out in Koreatown in LA, why bother coming to Korea? I went to some Indian restaurants in NZ, so I'm not gonna bother wasting my time on that subcontinent.

And let's not forget that 1.1 million man standing army up behind the Hollywood hills!

I was there for over a year.

And the one thing I've been noticing is the bloody-minded "I'm right and everyone else is wrong" attitude North Americans have. It's very tiresome. Koreans may be some of the rudest people on the planet(outside of a forum member), but I never met any one of them who thought the sun shined out of their heinies.

Here it's like every second person.

The other day I took some of the local public transportation for the first time since returning. The driver yelled at me because I didnt wait for everyone to get off of the bus before boarding. I mentally slapped myself into remembering that elbowing an old lady on your way into the bus wasnt considered a greeting like it is in Korea.

I won't even get into my experiences, which were about the same really. I will tell you one thing hanging around will probably only make the situation worse.
Of course if you tell people over here that, they don't listen either.

Korean Town in Los Angeles is the largest Korean community outside of Korea in the world, and it can be pretty cool... especially if your into Korea...

It seems that a lot of people on this thread are from small Canadian towns... wow, now that would be culture shock to go from that to Soeul and back again... maybe youre not longing for Korea so much as the big city....

Anyway, my advice is simple.... enjoy Korea, but watch out... every extra year you stay is going to make going back 10 times more difficult...

I've not experienced Reverse Culture Shock but I suspect after Korea and Australia I will when I return back to Canada. Thing is I'm not returning to small town Canada nor am I returning to small town province. Going back to Toronto to go back into my feild. This little trip to Korea and Australia is stricktly money and education. Once that is done back to Toronto to a pretty good paying job. EFL will always be just that for me, a break from Toronto. Since the field I work in has one of the highest rates of burnout leaving jobs for "breaks" has become a necessary survival skill. But I love my first choice in employment and will always return back to it. I guess it might be easier going back to Toronto, or re-adjusting, as it's bigger than say Halifax or Calgary.

Oh, yeah. The food here is crap. I remember why Canucks are all lardos. I've been here just over a week now and I feel my waistband getting tighter. I'd be happy to go outside and execise some, but man, it's frickin' cold here!

The food here is amazing. Im a canuck an I have gone from 92 kgs to 80 kgs in the time I have been here. If you eat fast food then you will have a problem. I actually went up to 98 kgs, because I was eating a lot of fast food. However, since I switched to a nearly all korean diet, I have slimmed down to 80 kgs. As for excercise, you can excercise at home, go to a gym.

Another point I'd like to add is that in the West, it seems people have forgot to connect with one another. I read some report on dating that says there are more singles in the US than ever before, yet they aren't connecting.

It seems people would rather sue each other than find compromise and such. The Internet has unfortunately led to more impersonal relations among people.

A lot of women are looking for Mr. Perfect rather than Mr. Right, and then pop! they are 40. The men are afraid of approaching girls since they might cry harassment or even worse, rape. Even after marriage, the spectre of divorce and the relevant proceedings make maybe people cynical.

I see many people who blast Korea and such, but they are still here and return all the time...maybe that should say something.

Ralph: When I said the "food is crap here", I meant Canada. Didnt you see all of the press releases about my leaving Korea last month?

Corpral: You want Moose meat? Do you know how many one-liners went through my head when I read that? Dont tempt me.

Peter07: I know what you mean. The "It's my way or the highway" attitude here is driving me up the wall.
