| One thing I really hate is when a game has a mandatory tutorial you just can't skip. Some of these are just absurd in their length and really dissuade you from running through the game a second time. |
Non-skippable tutorials and non-skippable cut scenes (especially long ones) are a pain, yes. Mind you, I always watch the cut scene the first time, but if my game crashes after watching it (for instance) I usually would rather not watch it again. |
How about when the game checkpoint saves (no quicksave) right before a long cutscene that introduces a boss fight...you know, you have to walk along a few corridors jump over some barrels, open a few doors, stock up on weapons and ammo... then the cutscene starts, right before a huge boss fight where you are sure to get pummeled at least 6 or 7 times....repeat corridors, barrels, doors, replenishing guns again and again and again.....
Grrrr...... |

Why do game designers think we enjoy it if we cannot save at all for long stretches, so we are forced to do the same long running/jumping/fighting sequences over and over every time we die?
Listen up game designers. The solution is simple -- give the user an option when installing the game:
1) Give the user a choice to play in "difficult mode" - save checkpoints few and far between. Repeat long stretches of the level if you die.
2) Give the user a choice to play in "easy mode" - can save anywhere, anytime, with frequent autosaving (especially before a boss fight). Basically no downtime if you die.
3) Give the user a choice to play in "hybrid mode" - the first time through a level, you can't save. So if you die, you go back to the beginning of the level. After you die once, you can save at any point.
This way the user can pick whatever way is more fun for him/her. Giving the option only when you install the game (instead of making it an in-game toggle) means players who enjoy playing the difficult option won't be tempted to cheat by saving all the time.
Am I not genius? |
