Well Ive been to over 50 countries, but I would have to say my 6 month overland truck and camping trip thru South east Africa incl. Egypt was awesome.
Its really is another world over there. See it to believe it! |
I'm doing a 58 day trip from Nairobi to Capetown next June. Can't wait! |
Where can I find info about a trip like this? |
I'm doing mine through Absolute Africa, but there are dozens of companies that do it. Ranging from 1 week to 6 month trips and everything in between. |
Another company is http://www.gapadventures.com/. Have met lots of their satisfied customers and plan on using them next year.
My favourite trip has to be Spain and Portugal. Mostly Seville and Barcelona. |
Yeah, I checked into them. Almost applied to work for them.
They're a bit too expensive for comparatively similar routes, equipment, itineraries, etc., though. Would have run me a 1000 or more if I remember correctly. I spent about two months comparing and found half a dozen other reputable companies offering better deals, imo. |

Actually, I hadn't looked at their prices for about a year until looking it up this week and I think it's gone up considerably. It probably has something to do with the economy and exchange rates that I can't wrap my mind around.
I'd also like to throw in the Eastern coast of Australia as a fantastic trip. I know it might not be 'exotic' enough, but after years in Asia it was wonderful to have huge clean beaches to ourselves and it was lovely to drive through and it's very laid back. Could be cheaper, though. |

I can only talk about places I've been. Would love to go to Europe.
In SE Asia, I have a soft spot for Bali. The culture just seems more real to me, even when it's alongside tourist cheese. I like the beaches and the restaurants and the temples and the pirate DVDs.
My favorite country is still Mexico. I worked there for a year and often wonder why I left. Gorgeous architecture, interesting things to see, fresh food and fruit, a pro-fun culture, and the least xenophobic people I've ever met. My school director used to recommend that I date the students! |
+1. I lived in Mexico for a few months during college and I have traveled there a lot. It is an amazing country. Guatemala is great too. I climbed an active volcano and we made smores from its heat. Pretty cool experience. Lake Atitlan in Guatemala is a must, as well as Tikal and the other Mayan ruins. Latin America is my favorite place on Earth. Especially Mexico and Central America. You must be heads up in these places though, as crime and theft are real possibilities. |

Pacaya? I did that as well. A buddy I was with went traipsing around on his own and nearly melted the soles off of his shoes. Funny in hindsight. Stinky at the time. |

Yeah, that was the one. Those rocks you climb across are damn hot! I remember putting a stick between the cracks of them and it caught on fire. Where in Guatemala did you go? I spent 4 weeks in Antigua. That is a really cool spot. |

I went to lots of places. Spent three months down there. A couple of weeks in Antigua (there for Semana Santa as well), a month at different places around the lake, to three of the borders and many places in between. |

I did that as well! Roasting marshmallows over flowing lava was definitely one of the highlights of my life. I was terrified of falling through the thin lava rock though.
I've been to Guatemala twice and I plan to go back many more times. So far I've been to Guatemala City (seeing it once was more than enough), Antigua, Pacaya, Lake Atitlan, Coban, Flores, and Tikal. I want to go to Semuc Champey next time, as well as Copan, Honduras. It's one of my favorite countries because there is so much to do and see there, the food is good, the people are mostly friendly and I love the culture. Someday I hope to retire on Lake Atitlan. |

haha Those rocks were really hot and under them was pure lava. The lava moved so slow it wasn't a danger as much as slipping between one of those rocks and breaking an ankle.
Guatemala City is kind of a no go. Es muy peligroso! Atitlan was the single best experience I had in Guatemala. I stayed, and I highly recommend the place, at La Iguana Perdida hostel, which you can only get to by boat. Once it is night you are locked there basically. I happened to be there on the night once a week when they have a huge dinner and a cross dressing party. I have a nice photo of me and some other guys in a dress . Good times. I went to most of the places you mentioned, and I actually did spend a bit of time in Copan, Honduras. It's a nice place. You could retire down there with probably 1/5 of the money it would cost you in the States, Canada, UK etc. If I could make enough money I would be moving down to Mexico or Central America to teach. The people are great and the culture is so rich and vibrant. |

Guatemala, hands down!
Watching the sunrise from the pyramids of Tikal and meeting Mayan people, enjoying dinner off the plaza in the colonial city of Antigua, cooking marshmellows over a volcano, and boating along the Carribean coast, oh my! |

Interesting how on the Caribbean coast there is a rastafarian vibe going on. Of course you probably sipped on some Gallo (I hope not Indio because that is some nasty sh*t). |

In Livingstone they're the Garifuna.

I worked at that hostel for two weeks. Very quaint. Got bored, though, and headed to the Bay Islands for Scuba Diving. |

Semuc Champey is absolutely mind-boggling. Really, really special place.
Copan is cool but if you've seen Tikal they might be a bit of a let down. They've got some amazing and very well preserved glyphs, though. I really like the layout of the town as well.
When I was there they had some dilapidated carnival going on with some of the sketchiest rides I'd ever been on. Woooh, won't forget that experience. |

I was only there for 2 days. I imagine 2 weeks being pretty boring there. |
