Word puzzles are good for vocabulary as well. If you give the same set of word puzzles to all your classes learn the Korean for the words. That might make the exercise more meaningful, and you could use it as a feedback for the use of the words in a Korean context

Sometimes it's a good way to find out who the bright students are since they usually finish first.

I do this. It helps my Korean too, because those words I don't already know, I can look up in the dictionary. If I teach the same material to 5 different classes a week, it doesn't even take an effort to remember the words. I also have a review of the previous week's words every class. They have to remember the words from the puzzle for homework. Then we practice the phonics the following week. Every two months I give them a test on those words too. Those suggesting that these puzzles don't benefit student's phonics are supid. The speaking test is great,

1. Which animal has a long nose?
2. Which animal has a long neck?

These questions are great for my 3rd grade elementary classes. You can even give hagwon coupons for those who find all of the words quickest. Great stuff.

In my experience, middle school students were easier to get along with. They spent more time talking to me than would most younger students; even to the extent of sharing their jokes.

I would occassionally make up my own (simple) crosswords, and (more often) organize team quizzes or play word games on the board. Unfortunately, there were one or two classes where games were the ONLY means of grabbing their attention, and sometimes even that was not enough.

Yeah, I've found the best way to deal with middle schoolers is to treat them less like kids and more like adults. Think about how you felt around that age, and how you were desperate to be "grown up".
