Does it work here, but Amazon won't ship it here? If so, do those who have one here just get a friend to ship it over? Thanks. |
I'm itching to jump on the Kindle bandwagon. And updated info from Amazon - they WILL ship to Korea now. Has anyone done this? Is it safe (customs etc?) or am I still better off having someone in the State send it to me? |

| I'm going to Hong Kong in a couple weeks. Any benefit of getting a Kindle there, or are they just shipped from the US and you must order online? |

AMAZON:
Items: $198.99
Shipping & Handling: $26.97
Total Before Tax: $225.96
Estimated Tax To Be Collected:* $0.00
Import Fees Deposit $33.95
Order Total: $259.91
This is for the Kindle WIFI + Leather Case with Light.
The Import Fees Deposit should cover any fees and taxes and stuff that Korean customs put on it. Kindle should breeze straight through customs.
The additional fees makes it pretty expensive though. |

For $198 you should just get the international 3G version (which is $189USD) and buy the case in Korea later.
I bought the 3G version while I was in the states (so cant tell you how much it cost to ship it to Korea). However I bought a cheap case (9,000W - it's not a nice leather case with a light though) on Interpark.
I wouldnt pay shipping and import on something you can probably (as in I'm not sure exactly what case you want) find in Korea.
That's a huge jump (from $139 for wi-fi only to $198) to just include accessories! |

This is a great idea! I just got here a few weeks ago and I'm not in the mode to know yet what is or is not easily available here... |

Mine arrived this week. I paid an Import Fees Deposit while ordering and I also had it shipped to my school as a gift for a co-teacher. There was no extra customs charge. I don't know if that was because I shipped it the way I did or if I was just lucky.
Anyway, so far it's great. Recommended. Haven't had a chance to test the WiFi- though. |

| It took a month to the day, but I think they were sold out when I ordered. From the time of shipping to delivery was about 5 days |

I had a Kindle 2 and now have a Kindle 3 they work just fine in Korea. If you have wifi you can download books or if you are like me you just download via your computer.
My K girlfriend bought me a Nook for Christmas after we were told it would work in Korea. Turns out it won't your IP address has to be US or Canada. I sent it back for a full refund (pending).
Sony eReaders are very good as well. But I recommend the Kindle easy to use and a dedicated eReader. I would recommend the Nook but due to the fact you can't purchase books internationally I say stay clear of it. |

My wife has a Kindle 3 (I bought her the US edition and had it shipped in to Korea for Christmas). Since she has the device linked to her US-based Amazon account (US address) and set up with a US credit card, she tells me she is NOT assessed the so-called "delivery" fee.
Maybe it would be different if we had 3G? I don't know. But I really don't understand the point/value of 3G service on a Kindle. There are plenty of Wi-Fi spots around, and you can always dload at home. |

Yeah I was wondering the same thing. I was wondering if you're able to at least look at websites or something if you have 3g, but if not then I don't get it either.
I guess it's for people who need the latest Dan Brown NOW! |

I had my Kindle delivered to my parent's house and use their address for purchases. I don't even bother with the wifi as it drains the battery and simply download via computer. However, I have had the wifi on a few times and I have never been assessed a "fee" of any kind while in Korea.
If you have a UK, Australia, or any of the other countries that Kindle supposedly ships to I cannot say if a fee is assessed but I can imagine that may very well be one. |

Yes you can look at websites and check your emails. I dont have a smart phone so I've even used it to look at maps and stuff.
My Amazon account is US based. I just bought a book this week and wasnt charged a fee for whispernet delivery.
I bought the 3G version because it was an extra $50 bucks and I thought "what the heck, that's not a lot more for 3G". However, if you dont need 3G wireless (I live in a very rural area so I like it) then I would just go for the wifi version.
I can definitely say that I've gotten my $50 bucks worth though. It use it a lot while I'm traveling (bus or train) to read and check emails. If you have a smart phone, you probably wont need the function.
I wonder how close we are to Amazon releasing the 4th Generation Kindle now. |

Any update on the Wi-Fi? Also, how much is the import fees deposit? I'm looking to do pretty much the same thing you did, since this option seems ideal.. |
